IT’S EASY to tell whose supporters are the most desperate or nervous, because Republicans have started looking for gaffes where none exist. On Saturday, Romney supporters went after President Obama for a line he used talking to supporters saying that “voting’s the “best revenge” against Mitt Romney and Republicans doing things they didn’t like or want to happen. Fundraising appeals from the right hit my inbox over the horror.
This from Jennifer Rubin, one of Romney’s chief boosters.
That’s the best he can do? “Voting is the best revenge”? And against whom should voters seek “revenge” — other Americans? A candidate who has the support of about half the electorate? It is mind-boggling, really, that this sort of snide, negative motivation is what President Obama has saved up for his final appeal.
Now, Ms. Rubin isn’t dumb, so she obviously thinks her readers are, because it’s very obvious Obama isn’t talking about revenge in the manner she’s professing. Obama’s audience is obviously expressing disapproval of Mitt Romney, so he said don’t boo, vote, “it’s the best revenge.”
Even after the pool report clearly explained Obama was referring to Romney’s behavior, including “scare tactics” in Ohio, to quote Jen Psaki, part of the campaign team, Byron York remained aghast.
“And the message [Obama] was sending is if you don’t like the policies, if you don’t like the plan that Gov. Romney is putting forward, if you think that’s a bad deal for the middle class, then you can go to the voting booth and cast your ballot. It’s nothing more complicated than that.” – Jen Psaki
But John Hinderaker actually called it “Obama’s November Blunder,” complete with this description:
Obama’s blunder isn’t likely to tip the scales with many voters, but in the closing days of the campaign it serves as a useful reminder of Obama’s dark side.
Mitt Romney even made an ad off of it.
It gives you an idea of just how tight this race is coming down to be, even if it’s Obama’s advantage, because Republicans can’t afford to let anything slide, even when it makes them look silly.
