News Desk: Mayor Emanuel, Karen Lewis & Teachers Union Reach Tentative Agreement

NO DETAILS, but it’s back to school on Monday, providing everything goes well on Sunday.

Looks like Rahm met his match.

For parents and teachers fed up with the pressures of high-stakes standardized tests – and the literal heat of unairconditioned classrooms – the Chicago Teachers Union president is a superhero. With the strike in the nation’s third-largest school district entering its fifth day Friday, the outspoken Chicago native and veteran high school chemistry teacher has emerged as the face of the fight for what she calls the “soul of public education.” – Karen Lewis: Fiery Chicago Teachers Union chief takes on wrath of Rahm (+video)

Couldn’t have happened to a “nicer guy.” I support the teachers and believe that they do have the interests of the students at heart. I also hate standardized tests because I don’t believe they amount to much.

Calling Emanuel a jackass would be an insult to jackasses. I wonder if he even understood how bad the optics looked when his kids weren’t going to public schools there and he was treating teachers that way.

Hope things work out for the CTU.

I’ve always liked Karen Lewis – she’s got “guts”. Actually, in this climate, it took a lot of courage to call a strike; but as Leslie Russell (a striking teacher) writes in the Chicago Tribune, they really had no choice (contrary to what Rahm Emanuel says). Having taught the same subjects and levels, I really feel for this teacher and the terrible conditions she has been working under – remember, teachers’ working conditions = students’ learning conditions! Imagine having a class split into two sessions so that the students have to come back for the rest of the class in the afternoon. OMG. Hopefully, something will be done about that and the class sizes. It’s a wonder she hasn’t quit. http://www.ctunet.com/blog/from-the-picket-line
