“I carried a Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum — that gun weighed more than I did! My parents grew that small business-from one 18-year-old guarding a bingo-to more than 125 people in three states. And sure, there was help along the way. But my parents took the risk. They stood up. And you better believe that they built it.” [Politico]
OUT OF THE west she became a rising light on Thursday. Gov. Susan Martinez is the first female governor of New Mexico and the first female Latino governor in the country. We will be seeing her a lot in the years to come.

Wow! In addition to being a pig, she looks like a pig.
Wow! Misogyny cleverly disguised as a third-grader’s taunt.
Is being a liberal and being erudite mutually exclusive conditions?
That was uncalled for, fangio. Why do men revert to this sexist BS with women politicians? I’ll never understand it. Object to a woman politican because of her ideology not her physiology. You’re smater than this, fangio, to know better.
Is being a liberal and being erudite mutually exclusive conditions?
And, you, casualobserver take people to task on this blog for being partisan. Pot meet kettle! Also, sexist remarks and attitudes (crude or not) are not limited to politically liberal men. Politically conservative and moderate men suffer from the same deficiency. All you have to do is revisit the 2008 campaigns on both sides of the aisle and you will remember the misogyny directed at Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin from both sides of the aisle mostly from men of whatever political persuasion.
If and when you spot me taking people to task simply for having an ideology, quote that accusatory line in your reply and I will promptly be humbled before you. A more careful reading of my posts should evidence that I mock, ridicule and disdain what that ideology causes people to say or imply.
Relative to Fangio’s post, a “pot meet kettle” comment from me would have been “all liberal males are closet fruiters” (andwould have also been pari passu on an intelligence quotient basis.
I quoted the line, it’s in bold. Stop dancing! And, being all defensive and stuff and making excuses.
So, when you make such an ignorant comment as you did in the sentence I quoted above, it’s because of your ideology? But, when others on the other side of the aisle make similar comments, it’s due to their being partisans?
I see.
Thanks for laughs, co. Always great to start the day with a smile.
Because obviously some men on the left only pretend to care about women’s rights.
Good take down on fangio’s disgusting insult. Well done, all of you.
I thought she was compelling and effective. I think she has a very bright political future and could draw independent voters.
As do I, Lynnette.
Did they check her for her papers before they let her into the convention?
heh. But, sad as well. There is a cognitive dissonance right now in the GOP that sooner or later will catch them up, sec.
Line of the night: ”Damn, we’re Republican”.
off to make t-shirts, mugs and anything else I can add a logo to…
Oh, and to fango and Sec: thanks for reminding me it’s a #waronwomen.
because after the outstanding job all of the RNC women have been doing, I was confused.
touche!
Sash, your owning up to the the fact that you are confused is old news….WAY old news.
Point to Sasha.
So, when you make such an ignorant comment as you did in the sentence I quoted above, it’s because of your ideology?
Interesting that no “reply button” appears after the post containing this comment…perhaps that is a limitation of the software or perhaps a message from management.
So, this will be over and out for me……..well, after this, that is………first, the “comment” was a question as opposed to a statement. A question, by definition, presumes no certain knowledge, so “ignorant” would not be a particularly germane adjective either. And therefore, what logic is there in debating an assertion eminating from a faulty premise?
Here is my advice…….accuse me of a veiled ad hominem towards liberals and we’ll let that stand. And then, by definition, my ideology would be a logical motivating force.
Keep dancing, man! LOL But, then you are an attorney so I kind of expect spinning yourself into a pretzel to win an argument. Unlike Queen Victoria, I’m quite amused.
Btw, if I want your advice, I’ll ask for it.
Oh, and this comment tells me quite a lot about your mindset
“Interesting that no “reply button” appears after the post containing this comment…perhaps that is a limitation of the software or perhaps a message from management.”
It’s the software, man! To even think to yourself that Taylor has some grande scheme to trip you up is not only laughable it’s downright egotistical and paranoid. I’m sure she spends all of her waking hours thinking all about you and plotting against you. Oh, brother, please get help.
Now, since I’m off topic, I’ll end it here.
IT’S A CONSPIRACY THAT STARTED WITH HILLARY MURDERING VINCE FOSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm. How shall I set off quotes today?
“Interesting that no “reply button” appears after the post containing this comment…perhaps that is a limitation of the software or perhaps a message from management.”
There. End quote.
Yes, they’ve added a new feature – everyone else gets to nest replies infinitely. You, however, get only four levels. Consider it the “I built this” feature, because you really have to make that special effort to have it applied to you.

Seriously? If this is a serious comment you shouldn’t be commenting here.
First draft of Susana Martinez’ speech:
[pretend I did a blockquote thing here]
“I carried a Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum — that gun weighed more than I did! But, you know, what was really hard was smelting the iron to make that thing. How much carbon do you use in gun metal, and is it nickel or titanium that you have to add? And then I had to build one of those machine tools that ream out the barrel. Boy, was that tough. And I had a little trouble finding enough saltpeter in the back yard to make the gunpowder, but hey, it’s simpler than cordite, and I had to be to the bingo parlor by 9AM to guard it.
“‘Cause you, see, that’s where things really got dicey. After I found enough people jobs so that they could come in and buy our stuff, there still wasn’t a road for them to drive there. That’s how I’d spend my evenings – paving all that tar I mixed during the slow parts of the business day …
“You see, that’s what’s so great about America, it’s a place where you can make it if you’re willing to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, after you’ve picked the cotton and flax and spun it into thread, and shot the cow (I guess it’s a good thing I made that .375 first, huh?) …”
[pretend I did an end blockquote thing here]
Despite the wacky ideas that some commenters here have about liberals, we actually do get that it takes a lot of effort and some sacrifice to create a business. Any of us who have even thought seriously about starting a business can relate to the idea that government can be more of an impediment to starting a business than it can be an aid.
And when it seems like the government’s only role in your life is to demand taxes from you, and you still have to pack a gun you can barely carry to the bingo parlor, because the city doesn’t think it’s a priority to guard your part of town, then it’s easy to get the idea that you did it on your own. But you didn’t. Lots of other folks worked hard so that you could have the things you used to build that business, and a properly functioning government made sure that the commerce it depends on is both safe and honest.
There simply are no “self-made” people in this country. We all are able to do what we do because there is a society around us that is able to do all those things you don’t have the time or the skills to do, like sewing those bootstraps on that you’re pulling yourself up with.
That’s what liberals get that these folks don’t seem to. We know that business, and most everything else in life, goes better if there’s an orderly, honest, educated, and healthy society around us. Whatever we as a society can do to make ourselves better in those ways benefits us all. At least, it benefits those of us who aren’t in the crime or security business. That’s what Elizabeth Warren was talking about when she said “You didn’t build this”. She meant that there were a lot of other people who helped build it, and they could only do so because there was a somewhat functional government there to enable it. As that government becomes less functional, thanks to those philosohically aligned with Ms. Martinez, we see that business works less well, which is just what anyone with any real sense would expect.
That’s what I find so annoying about Ms. Martinez and her ilk. It’s not that I envy her, or that I want to “tear [her] down” to use the words of one tiresome commenter recently, but because she just conveniently overlooks all that. There are plenty of people in this country who work hard, and some of them still do tough, dangerous work, who aren’t successful enough to be a speaker at a political convention. They deserve a fair deal, too. They aren’t going to get one until the folks who were that successful realize they didn’t build it by themselves.
The “second draft” of this comment is at my place.
