WHAT ELSE CAN be said about this remarkable competitor? She’s one of an elite group of African American gymnasts ever to compete in the Olympics and the first to win the gold in gymnastics all-around. Yet people are actually, unbelievably sniping about her hair.
Not here.
This athletic teen phenom ripped the heart out of the Russian gymnasts who couldn’t catch her, because Gabby was on a trajectory she had visualized so strongly that nothing could shake it from manifesting.
This fierce performer represents the heart of what it takes to not only be in the Olympics, but win gold. Those who do are different. You can see it. We watched it.
The pressure doesn’t crush them, it fuels them.
Sometimes it comes down to mere hundreds of a point in perfection.
It’s cruel, exhilarating, and life altering, but athletes like Gabby Douglas thrive on it.
Anyone who has ever performed among the best knows the feeling, but few have lived the experience of what it’s like to be a gold medal Olympian.
When it was finally over and she’d nailed her floor routine, Gabby’s smile said it all. It had all been worth it and the tears streaming down her mother’s face as she watched from the crowd proved it.

People can so stupid and jealous.
I think she is adorable.
Yes they sure can and I agree. Love me some Gabby!
People like to say crap about anything. There was nothing wrong with Gabbys hair. She is a talented and she is proving it.
@FMI: Say it again: People like to say crap about anything.
sighs. Sad that some people can be so ugly.
I LOVE her beauty and elegance!!!
Thank you for posting Taylor, this video brought tears to my eyes!
She was awesome.
WOOOOHOOOO!!!
She is beautiful.
Great post Taylor, her story to get where she is today brought tears to this bad ass bikers eyes.
Only sixteen years old and already has put her name in the history books. A beautiful talented young girl who has her whole life ahead of her. and to think its only just begun.
Unfortunately, Hairgate shined the spotlight on some issues within the Black Community that go way back. The hair issue among black females (I’ve watched it in my family) goes SO deep and has SO much emotion in it. Chris Rock’s movie Good Hair (2009) damn near caused WWIII in some circles in the black community.
My wife went BALLISTIC when a friend of hers tweeted about Gabby Douglas’ saying it was a “worldwide nappy disaster”. My wife’s reaction in defense of Gabby was so strong and hard, she’s minus a friend now.
I told my two teen-aged daughters that Gabby was the first American woman PERIOD to win GOLD in the all-around and team gymnastics event. They were beyond impressed and want Gabby t-shirts.
Thankfully the hair sniping was in the minority and the vast majority of people are celebrating the greatness that is Gabby Douglas.
I don’t pretend to understand it but I know the “hair” thing exists. It is probably worth a couple of disertations. My girl AA students always wanted to touch my hair ( bone straight, a trace of a native american ancestor), some would ask if they could comb it.Hair was a big topic with them.
At one time I lived in a very diverse part of St. Louis City called the West End. I always noticed a cute hair salon across from the service station I took my car to.One day knowing I had a long wait for my car I went over and asked the receptionist if I could get a quick cut. I thought she seemed kind of shocked but she said sure someone can give you a cut. I turned around to find a chair and found myself looking at about ten AA women all looking at me with surprise. I swear each of those women was having a different process done to her hair and I had never seen anything like it. We all ended up laughing and I got the worst haircut of my life.Ha! makes me laugh thinking of it.
I was so shocked…reading about people posting nasty remarks about Gabby hair. I was so focused watching her perform at the Olympics that I never once noticed her hair style. I think those that posted all the negative things about Gabby has emotional and mental issues.
But a lot of female athletes always get judge unfairly by the media and small minded people for the way they look. You never see the male athletes judge this harshly.
Gabby Douglas is a beautiful black American girl and the best female gymnast in the entire world. Period.
Haters, God is love.
That young woman is not only amazingly talented she is tough. I can’t imagine that she will think twice about stupid snide comments. She has places to go and people to met. Her mom made me cry. What a great story about loving determined women.
