IT WAS A big day for homophobia and a news station at Arizona’s KTVK didn’t want to miss a moment, captured by TPM. They even spent money to dispatch a helicopter to capture the line outside the chain restaurant. That’s right, they actually believe this is news worthy.
Standing up against the civil rights of one group of Americans is that important to Mike Huckabee and other religious conservatives on the right and they’ve got friends in the media who think so too.
Rick Warren tweeted the restaurant set “a world record.”

My fervant wish is that the theocrats and their followers make it a practice to eat at Chick -fil- A daily until their arteries become as hardened as their hearts.
Who was it that said facism will arrive wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible?
Ironically, it was Sinclair Lewis in 1935.
Lake Lady–I agree. Let them eat lots of right wings full of artery clogging fat. Their heads are already full of it.
LakeLady…how perfect “until their arteries become as hardened as their hearts.”
RIGHT on the money.
It was a big day for the First Amendment.
…and a very bad day for civil rights.
Do you mean the right to freely assemble or the freedom of speach?
The owner of Hate Fill-A have every right in the world to be as homophobic as his superstition addled, hypocritical lil self wants to be. And he can donate money to any hate based political effort he wants to.
And the Mayors are WRONG for trying to keep hate-fill-As from opening because he is a superstition addled, hypocritical bigot.
And I as a citizen and consumer have the right….the obligation to let him know that because he CHOOSES to side with bigotry and wants to deny people basic human rights I have the right and WILL spend my money somewhere else.
AND be very vocal about it.
AND encourage all people of conscious to do the same.
He had lines one day because faux not news sent out the call for the crazies….but Hate-fii-A’s customer favor-ability rating dropped FORTY % since this started.
And the boycott will not stop. Ask limpwithnoballs about boycotts and wether they work…if you can get past the adds on his show for impotence scams, gold scams and the ones hawking survivalist foods for the coming food riots….oh wait…if you’re in the Phila market you won’t find him unless you are close to the low watt station he is consigned to.
A “big day for civil rights”? Looks to me like it’s a big day for some ignorant, hateful individuals to use those rights to call for a minority to be denied them. The only thing worth celebrating is that they have the right to make asses of themselves if they want.
They are allowed to exercise their rights as they see fit. So what if their opinions went out of favor years ago, it’s still their right and that is what makes it a good thing. Just because you don’t agree with them, doesn’t make it any less important.
I’m sure that these ignorant hateful individuals feel the same way about gay-rights and pro-choice demonstatioins, but the fact that the government allows all points of view to voice their opinions is great.
Taylor — I’ve read, from interviews with people who were there, that some of those who made a point to go to a restaurant did so to stand up for freedom of speech, even if they disagree with the political views of the corporate owner. Come on — the Boston mayor and Rahm E were flat out wrong to say they’d deny occupancy simply because of political views, even if all zoning, etc., requirements were met. That just doesn’t sit right with a lot of people, including people like me who are firmly in favor of rights for gays. (I did not eat at Chic, however, because I don’t like the corporate funding of anti-gay groups. Plus, frankly, I don’t know where there is one around here. I still wouldn’t have, even if there were one across the street.)
I wrote that I disagreed with anyone trying to manipulate zoning laws because of an ignorant business owners bigotry.
So I don’t know what your beef is.
Heard the same thing re: Mike Huckabee’s homophobic appreciation day. Good for those people, but it’s not the story being hyped.
Religious conservatives like Dan Cathy are against people’s civil rights. Like you, I agree they shouldn’t be supported.
You can support the person’s right to free speech without supporting that person’s views can’t you? I’m sure that the ACLU doesn’t support the beliefs of the KKK, but they still represent them in court.
It seems to me that you would apply the law differently to groups with whose beliefs you don’t agree.
“It seems to me that you would apply the law differently to groups with whose beliefs you don’t agree.”
It seems to me you are either ignorant of what Ms. Marsh has REPEATEDLY said OR you are willfully being dishonest. IF it is the ignorance problem go back and re-read what she has said….hell, even what I have said. If it is the willful dishonesty………
Well, here’s what Ms. Marsh wrote:
“Standing up against the civil rights of one group of Americans…”
They have every right to do so, just as the KKK has the right to their beliefs. To me, that statement indicates that because a person or group is taking a stand against another group’s civil rights, it is legitimate for the government to censure the first group which it is not and that is what is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the constitution.
“Standing up against the civil rights of one group of Americans is that important to Mike Huckabee and other religious conservatives on the right and they’ve got friends in the media who think so too.”
For onr thing use the entire quote and please, please just once overcome the faux not news urge to quote out of context.
Now…try real hard…can you point out where Ms. Marsh said these homophobes said they don’t have the right to be homophobes?
You said “To me, that statement indicates that because a person or group is taking a stand against another group’s civil rights, it is legitimate for the government to censure the first group which it is not and that is what is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the constitution.”
Which to me indicates a complete inability to understand simple sentences and concepts. OR dishonesty and an attempt to change the subject.
Jesus Christ on a biscuit, I’m talking about A NEWS ORG SENDING A HELICOPTER to a fast food chain.
You’re talking about something else.
But since you’re hell bent on changing the subject, I don’t care if people stand up and make theselves known as homophobic bigots. Go for it.
But this has squat to do with what I wrote.
“Jesus Christ on a biscuit,”
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You GO GIRRRRRRRRRL!!!!
Oh, SNAP, Taylor!
Why is it okay for Chck Fil A to donate to a hate group? I think a lot of these conservatives just have such a knee jerk reaction that they don’t know even what they are supporting.
It’s not about free speech. No one is telling Mr. Cathey that he can’t say what he is saying.
Had there been a Fox News back in 1960, I’m sure there would have been a Woolworth’s Lunch-counter Appreciation Day, too.
Lincoln Staxx
If you ever wondered what the AZ stands for in TPAZ it is for Arizona. There were 1 hour lines at the Chick-fil-A here in Scottsdale and all around Phoenix. I’m on the front line of extreme right-wing batshit crazyness. Because of this, I have zero tolerance for fake liberals, quasi-progressives, and blue dog Democrats (I’m looking at you BHO). The extreme right is unapologetic and unforgiving. The left is as soft as cookie dough.
Tell it, sir.
There were hours-long lines in Chicago and Schaumburg (a northwest suburb of Chicago), too, according to the news. And NBC reported that lots of them were simply standing up for free speech.
Taylor, my beef is that you’re criticizing news organizations for making this a news story. It clearly is on, when you get thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of people, nationwide, to patronize a particular restaurant on a given day, in response to what many perceive as a threat to first amendment rights, AND, yes, for many a chance to stand up for so-called “traditional marriage,” that’s a pretty big news story.
I am wating for these hypocritical Mayors to tell the same thing to Muslims and Orthodox Jews as well. Although I am not going to hold my breath.
I sincerely hope if anyone opens up a Matzo Ball Emporium, or Anything but Pork Bazaar that contributes to homophobic bigots to be consistent they would have to won’t they.
i find that ironic because conservatives have used the same tactics that Rahm used in Chicago. Some Muslims were going to build a mosque in TN and the legislators there used the same tactics trying to keep the mosque from being built.
Let’s be accurate.
I’m *blasting* one local channel for dispatching a helicopter, which is usually utilized for something more important than who’s in line at Chick-fil-A.
I obviously think this should be covered, as not only have I written about it, but I gave Joyce the go ahead to do so as well.
If the network had dispatched someone to the site, they may have found out who was in line for what reason. THAT’S the story that puts the line in context. It’s like showing a chase scene with cops and robbers or a white Bronco, without know whom they’re chasing or who’s in the car.
I agree with the criticisms of the mayors. They should know better.
Ther is another freedom that is often forgotten and I wish someone would start talking about. Freedom FROM religion!
Lake Lady, thank you!
Isn’t this just a tit for tat, that didn’t go as some wanted?
One day of Homophobes and Constitutional purists vs a boycott that has already nearly halved the consumer opinion of the chain? I would say unless the repug/teabaggers and UberChristians start living on a fired chicken only diet we know how this will end up. Hate-fill-A will go back to being a regional(aka SOUTHERN) chain of feeding troughs for fat racists and superstitionists.
I just wish this whole silly business would go away.
Guys and gals freedom of speech means that even homophobic, hate-filled speech gets its day. I have zero tolerance for zipper-heads like Rahm Emanuel shutting down a legitimate business because they don’t like what the CEO said on some social issue.
Rahm is an A number one block head, and skeevy SOB to boot. He has passed all sorts or ordinances to shut down free speech. If you actually support the right of people to peacefully assemble and petition for a redress of grievances (I’m talking to you Occupy fans) then Rahm is your bete noire.
If Rahm and company can zone Chic A Fil out of existence, then some KKK Klown can zone a Mosque out of existence too. Tell me partisans of Freedom and Individual Liberty how is that a good thing?
I also think the attempt to shut down Chic A Fil was really bad politics. The right LIVES on this kind of stuff. They love playing the down-trodden victim. They also love indulging in their favorite sport of “Hippy Kicking.” Rahmbo gave them a twofer. He gave them the opportunity to flip off a Godless, Heathen, Northern Liberal and they got wave the flag of freedom as a bonus.
What Rahm and others did was the most blatant pandering I have seen in long time. It was a no-cost political move that allowed them to fly the queer flag whilst not really doing anything to improve the lot of GLBT citizens in any apreciable way. Far too many people who claim to be politically savvy fell for this rot hook, line, and sinker.
I did not even know of Chic O Fil’s existence before this tempest in a tea pot. And as this purveyor of artery clogging delights is very thin on the ground in SF, or at least in the South Bay, I have no real need to seek them out. I can get my atherosclerosis on quite nicely at Five Guys Burgers, In And Out, Micky D’s, KFC, Jack In The Crack, Taco Trough or Fuddruckers. All are a short drive away.
As for the helicopter, well, it is the silly season and August, which means slow, slow, slow news day. May as well use the resources; right?
Besides, the Supremes are about to weigh in on Prop 8 and DOMA; that is where the real action is. If the Supremes strike down both, this whole silliness about a Fast Food joint’s political incorrectness will be besides the point. If the Supremes add the freedom to marry to the list of rights we enjoy, then the whole lot of bigoted, self-righteous, fake Christians can choke on that artery-clogging crap served up by their fellow homophobe. Me, I’m going to El Polo Loco … yummers!
Strongly second! Well said, spincitysd

El Poco Loco?!!!!!! WHERE!!!! TELL me they have Tamales?!!!!
Sec, we have El Polo all over the place in the shiny metropolis of San Jose, California. There are ten in and around our fair city with one all the way out in the wilds of Gilroy. The easiest one to get to is on Story Road, just pop off 101 and go East young man. 1701 Story Road, Bldg 30, San Jose, CA
(408) 254-3500. You can also pick up other odds and ends at the Mexican Supermarket there. It is East San Jose though, the neighborhood is a tad sketchy. Still, if you can’t score tamales in that area, you’re a complete goober.
