A fundraising campaign launched by the Saudi royal family on behalf of the people of Syria generated more than $32 million worth of donations in one day. The nationwide show of support has been extended for another week and could raise millions more by Friday. As no other countries have demonstrated a willingness to intervene militarily, many nations are now focusing on the refugee and humanitarian problems caused by the Syrian crisis. Saudi Arabia has to be the most backward place on the planet. They treat women like dirt. If they want to stop a humanitarian crisis they should focus within their own borders.
No argument.
They are also the most important American ally in the region on the Arab Muslim side and critical to the Arab League’s relevance, as well as central to bridging the gap between non-Muslim western countries and Muslim nations.
To be effective in foreign policy the U.S. must live in the world as it is, while pushing for modernization and human rights every chance we get.
I am not sure how far the advance of “modernization and human rights” will be in Syria. I ave a feeling things are going to get much worse. Syria borders Lebanon and Iraq. I have a feeling they are going to end up much like those two countries.
