Liz Cheney Defends Sarah Palin Against Dad’s Rhetorical Buckshot

Rarely do I disagree with best VP ever but @SarahPalinUSA more qualified than Obama and Biden combined. Huge respect 4 all she’s done 4 GOP. – Liz Cheney, via Twitter

“Obviously, I’m not a big fan of President Obama,” said Cheney in an excerpt from an interview with ABC News aired Monday on “Good Morning America.” “I think he’s been one of our weakest presidents. I fundamentally disagree with him philosophically — be hard-put to find any Democratic president I disagree with more.” Asked by ABC’s Jonathan Karl if Obama was “worse than Jimmy Carter, in your perspective,” Cheney responded, “Yes.” – Cheney: Obama worse than Carter, ‘one of our weakest presidents’

THE HEIRESS to Dick Cheney’s neoconservative legacy made a rare step out beyond her father to stand up for Sarah Palin. It’s been relative silence from conservative women on the right after former V.P. Dick Cheney unloaded on Mrs. Palin in an interview ABC News.

That one,” Cheney said, “I don’t think was well handled.”

“The test to get on that small list has to be, ‘Is this person capable of being president of the United States?’”

Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.

“I like Governor Palin. I’ve met her. I know her. She – attractive candidate. But based on her background, she’d only been governor for, what, two years. I don’t think she passed that test…of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake.”

Dick Cheney’s cheap shot artistry is founded on the reality that he’s setting the record straight while he has time. This evidently means unloading on everyone in sight. As the quote at the top reveals, he’s making sure Pres. Obama gets his fair share as well.

There’s no doubt Sarah Palin’s vice presidential candidacy was a disaster. A great deal of the blame should be laid at the McCain campaign’s doorstep. There was no reason to believe Palin could handle national interviews before she’d even been trotted out to the right-wing base through wingnut radio. Missing this simple strategy was political malpractice and would have allowed Mrs. Palin to prepare for what was to come, while gaining confidence through interviews in friendly territory.

Palin also deserves a lot of credit, which I write about in my book, for how she rallied the Tea Party amid the Obamacare campaign, being one of those responsible for the bad marketing wrap the Democratic health care plan received. That she ended up using the power she’d amassed unwisely, replicating some of her worst attributes that included her behavior after the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, is still playing out. But she has had an impact on the Republican Party of today that is far greater than Dick Cheney, which was proven when Liz Cheney got her back.

V.P. Dick Cheney’s legacy will not be a positive one when history’s final episode is written. It will likely center on the changes of the man from where he began, the damage Nixon’s resignation caused him psychologically, as well as giving historians much to ruminate over, starting with his reputation that came crashing down during the Bush administration. Cheney’s torture policy also did real damage to our country, while his interference with CIA policy left one man in his office, Scooter Libby, indicted and disgraced. Cheney’s fall from grace is proven by Pres. George W. Bush distancing himself from his own vice president in his second term, with Cheney’s power neutered.

Liz Cheney’s defense of Palin is as strategic as it is heartfelt. She’s not about to tick off the Tea Party queen or her fans. It’s just bad form in a party who depends on the far right to get nominated. Because keeping your options open is job one in life, no matter what you do. At some point it’s a good bet Mrs. Cheney will step out of the political sidelines and make a play of her own. Whether it’s for senator or perhaps eyeing the presidency herself, she’ll need all the help she can get. After all, we are talking about the Republican Party, where women are given jobs and titles, but rarely the requisite responsibility.

And as chairman of Keep America Safe, Mrs. Cheney is making sure she stays moored to the one sure thing that can impress Republican voters, especially if you’re a woman: national security.

I wish Sarah Palin was running for President. John McCain chose her over Mitt Romney for very good reason. Romney is not very popular in Virginia. It is funny when I read posts from my friends that say things like “Remember to vote for the ENTIRE GOP ticket this fall.” In my opinion, Mitt Romney is a democrat. He says corporations are people. He is right. His “people” were involved with abusing children. I am relieved that his connection with child abuse is starting to get some attention.

We need less Republicans like Mitt Romney, Scooter Libby, and Dick Cheney and more Republicans like Sarah Palin running the show!

      Mitt Romney is a democrat.

Romney had taken positions in Massachusetts that were anathema to the conservative base, particularly on abortion and gay rights. Running against Ted Kennedy in 1994, Romney had declared himself a supporter of a woman’s right to choose on abortion, and claimed he would do more for gay rights than Kennedy. Then he changed positions on abortion. A year before he launched his presidential candidacy, he tried to explain his evolving views to several Washington Post reporters. [One columnist] who had grilled him that day later described his explanations as “baroque circumlocutions.”
The McCain campaign, sensing an opportunity to stop Romney even before he could get launched, stoked the story line that Romney was a flip-flopper. A video of Romney from 1994 surfaced that showed him defending abortion rights. The nascent Romney campaign was overwhelmed by the barrage of criticism.

Iowa attack phone ads are not true; I am pro-life
Q: [to Brownback]: Your campaign has been making phone calls to Iowa voters about Mitt Romney:
    (BEGIN AUDIO)
ANNOUNCER: Mitt Romney is telling Iowans that he is firmly pro-life. Nothing could be further from the truth. As late as 2005, Mitt Romney pledged to support and uphold pro-abortion policies and pass taxpayer funding of abortions in Massachusetts. His wife, Ann, has contributed money to Planned Parenthood. Mitt told the National Abortion Rights Action League that, “You need someone like me in Washington.“
    (END AUDIO)
Q: Do you stand by that attack?
BROWNBACK: I certainly do. There’s one word that describes that ad, and it’s ”truthful.“ That’s a truthful ad. And that’s what campaigns are about: for getting the truth out, expressing the differences between candidates.

Q: Is everything in that ad true?

ROMNEY: Virtually nothing in that ad is true. I am pro-life. That’s the truth. Every action I’ve taken as governor of Massachusetts has been pro-life.

Tired of holier-than-thou attitude about becoming pro-life
Q: [to Romney]: Are any of the specifics true in Sen. Brownback’s phone ad calling you pro-choice?
ROMNEY: Abortion is a very difficult decision. We’re involved in the lives of two people: a mom and an unborn child. I’ve come down on the side of saying I’m in favor of life. The best way you can learn about someone is not by asking their opponent, but ask them, “What do you believe, and what’s your view?” And I am pro-life. And virtually every part of that ad is inaccurate. I’m pro-life. My positions are pro-life.

BROWNBACK: You can go on YouTube and see the governor speaking himself about where he is on this position in 1994.

ROMNEY: Look, I was pro-choice. I am pro-life. You can go back to YouTube and look at what I said in 1994. I never said I was pro-choice, but my position was effectively pro-choice. I changed my position. And I get tired of people that are holier-than-thou because they’ve been pro-life longer than I have. But I’m proud of the fact.

and also, let’s face it… Obamacare is Romneycare

    • Taylor Marsh July 30, 2012 at 4:50 pm #

      Obamacare is Romneycare

      Few dispute this reality.

However, NO Democrat is signing on to the Paul Ryan budget.

NO Democrat that has any power would complete discount the Palestinians.

The Mitt Romney of Massachusetts has been replaced by Tea Party ass-kisser Mitt.

      • mjsmith July 30, 2012 at 6:14 pm #

No matter what your political position is, Mitt Romney has, had, or will have they same exact view.

Shouldn’t that comment be in quotes with appropriate sourcing?

NDD1 – Thre is a source listed for every quote. Just google up “Mitt Romney is a Democrat” and you will find plenty more specific examples.

Whether it’s for senator or perhaps eyeing the presidency herself, she’ll need all the help she can get.

Yes she will. Liz Cheney’s obviously smart and can pretty much make a run at Senator or the Presidency. Actually if she was in the Republican primaries, it would have been VERY interesting to see. But I think what you wrote here Taylor basically hits it right:

She’s not about to tick off the Tea Party queen or her fans. It’s just bad form in a party who depends on the far right to get nominated

    .

The far “anything” is not dependable. As a former card carrying member of the far left (ok, fringe left), we were not very diplomatic when it looked like you were “going along” (even if it yielded good results). We wanted immediate action and if you didn’t fit our flexible time-table, you were deep-sixed. My Tea Party neighbor hates Mitt Romney and just looks at Liz Cheney as the daughter of Dick Cheney. He speaks immensely higher of Sarah Palin because in his words, she “puts it out there and walks the walk”. Liz Cheney is all Beltway Intellectual (not being negative about it) and I just can’t see her rolling hard with The Tea Party. Sarah Palin and Liz Cheney are apples and oranges that don’t like Democrats and Liberals. But they roll much different.

I think it was a cheap shot to use Obama/Biden as cover to stick up for Sarah Palin….If Liz Cheney really wanted to make a statement in defense of Sarah Palin a better example would have been Romney, the current GOP candidate.

If she seriously, believes Sarah Palin is more quailed then Obama/Biden…then what does that mean for Mitt Romney, after all he was past over for VP slot in 2008, by John McCain. In other words, if Sarah Palin is so damn qualified why is she not the nominee instead of boring Mitt Romney?

Sarah Palin is not the nominee, because she knew people in her own party aka Dick Chaney…would never allow her to make it out of the primaries. Sarah Palin would have ended up being railroaded like Rick Santorum. So, she choose to sit out this years election.

Speaking of sister Sarah, I see her and Todd made an appearance at chick fil a. It’s nice to see Sarah still standing up for bigotry. I am sure good ole Liz Chaney, will ignore her gay sister rights, to crawl over broken glass to vote out the “Foreign.”

Yep, Liz Chaney is someone I hope and dream of being a U.S. Senator or President, one day. I can already see her campaign slogans:

“Vote for me I am my father, accept I have lady parts.” LOL
    Or
“I am smarter, faster and 100% Whiter…than the “Foreign.” SMH

Its sad that people are so “desperate” to have a woman in office…that “any” woman will do.

For those of us old enough to remember, we will remember Julie Nixon and her defense of her father for years after Watergate. And, at one time, Julie Nixon was the Liz Cheney of her day. But, Liz Cheney makes Julie Nixon look like Eleanor Roosevelt.

Liz Cheney is her father in heals and that about sums it up.
