screen capture of Matthew McConaughey in "Magic Mike"
In Magic Mike, he’s no longer a leading man. He’s become a character actor, the magnificently preserved yet spiritually gone to seed Older Guy; implicit in the movie’s scheme is that he’s handing off the reins of stardom to Channing Tatum. Yet McConaughey, I dare say, has never been a better actor than he is in Magic Mike. And maybe that’s because he was really a character actor all along — a classic case, in fact, of a character actor stuck in a leading man’s body. He is now 42 years old, but in an overly youth-fixated Hollywood, time hasn’t simply caught up with him. It may, at last, have set him free. – Entertainment Weekly
IT’S THE FOURTH of July and hot as hell. The independence of our country a great reason to celebrate liberation, freedom and what makes this country what it is.
To the gay and lesbian soldiers who no longer have to serve in secret, with a nod of respect to two men in the chain of command, Pres. Obama and former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who were instrumental in making it happen.
To Mitt Romney and the Republican Party for appointing Gov. Bob trans-vaginal probe McDonald to chair the RNC platform committee.
To Democrats choosing North Carolina as the convention sight, a non-union state and a place where the Republican legislature in a midnight vote on Monday decided to defund Planned Parenthood.
To the only female running for president in 2012, Jill Stein.
To Illinois voters who might be able to rid themselves of Joe Walsh and his reprehensible smearing of three-limb amputee and veteran Tammy Duckworth, his Democratic opponent.
“Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, that’s all she talks about. Our true heroes, it’s the last thing in the world they talk about.” – Rep. Joe Walsh
To the female Air Force recruits who may get justice, protection and one more level of equality. From the Los Angeles Times:
Six Air Force basic training instructors face criminal charges and six others are under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct with female recruits in a widening scandal at the service’s training command at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
Gen. Edward D. Rice Jr., commander of the Air Education and Training Command, told a Pentagon press conference that 31 victims have been identified so far. All were undergoing or had recently completed basic training when they were allegedly preyed upon by male instructors, he said.
With a loud SCREW YOU to Sen. Marty Golden and his “Posture, Deportment and the Feminine Presence” seminar, because we don’t need your stinking rules anymore.

A grateful thanks to U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, who issued a temporary restraining order to stop the last abortion clinic in Mississippi from getting its doors closed for now.
To the long history of independent journalism in this country, which lately has been seen through Vanity Fair‘s investigation of Mitt Romney’s finances and off shore accounts, proving nothing illegal, but continues Romney’s fetish for secrecy, and confirms yet again he’s really loaded. There’s also David Corn’s fairly breathless piece on Romney’s involvement in Bain and exactly when he departed, which also got the attention of the Atlantic, though the story’s focus is something very different and altogether unseemly.
As for Matthew McConaughey in “Magic Mike,” a liberating, light summer movie that treats women to hot men and a cool ending, with two strong female characters who love to look, even touch, but aren’t stupid enough to buy the fantasy. Think “Lincoln Lawyer” meets Chippendales.
Yes, women like visuals and flesh, too, something that the entertainment industry said we didn’t.
…and speaking of flesh, men, sex, and liberation, not to mention getting your kinky on, if you haven’t picked up a copy of “50 Shades of Grey,” what are you waiting for?

Hey, how about that Matthew McConaughey, huh?
What a swell career he’s having.
Absolutely, Joseph. The movie is a hoot.
Happy Independence Day to all of you patriots working to make America a better country. I’m privileged to be in your company.
Taylor, Happy Independence Day to you and yours.
Thanks for mentioning the latest outrage by Illinois asshat Joe Walsh. His dismissal of Col. Duckworth’s service and sacrifice are a potent reminder of the unmasked inhumanity of the teabagger/republican mentality.
Mitt Romney claimed that his sons’ working on his campaign is the equivalent of serving in the military. I’m not sure if Col. Duckworth’s parents would agree. I wouldn’t, but then what do I know? Actually, I know this” anyone piloting a helicopter in a combat zone is either crazy/brave or just plain gutsy.
My thanks to Col. Duckworth and all like her. Rep. Walsh can go to iraq and pound sand.
Okay, post today. I would like to add a happy birthday to Malia Obama
Dead Beat dad Walsh is simply below contempt……but saying a repugnantklan/teabagger is actually giving them more credit then they are due.
I don’t have the words to adequately express my respect and admiration for Col. Duckworth. She is EXACTLY the kind of person/woman we need in our government today.
