… But on Fox, he did acknowledge the importance of getting the job done before the November election. “Elections sometimes are really close,” he said. “We don’t want non-U.S. citizens on our voting rolls and voting, so I’m going to do my best to get it done as quickly as I can.” – The Hill
PURGING “NONCITIZEN” VOTERS is the charge and it has gotten Gov. Rick Scott a lot of negative press. His reaction is a weird one, which is to sue the Obama administration’s Department of Homeland Security to get a database he alleges has accurate voter information.
Neil Cavuto from Fox News challenged Scott’s methods but especially the results (see video above), detailing the lack of support from leading Republicans like Sen. Marco Rubio.
“The Florida’s Secretary of State office wil be filing a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security to give us that database,” Scott said. “We want to have fair, honest elections in our state and so we have been put in a position that we have to sue the federal government to get this information.” The move comes after Scott disregarded a request from the Department of Justice on Wednesday to abandon efforts to purge eligible voters.
Gov. Scott’s reaction to county election chiefs, including 30 Republicans, refusing his voter purge plan has put him on the defensive. From the Miami Herald last week:
The 67 county elections supervisors — who have final say over voter purges —are not moving forward with the purge for now because nearly all of them don’t trust the accuracy of a list of nearly 2,700 potential noncitizens identified by the state’s elections office. The U.S. Department of Justice has ordered the state to stop the purge.
“We’re just not going to do this,” said Leon County’s elections supervisor, Ion Sancho, one of the most outspoken of his peers. “I’ve talked to many of the other supervisors and they agree. The list is bad. And this is illegal.”
Suing DHS is about Scott’s own ego, which is just the beginning of his problems that start with abject incompetence and lack of seriousness. It’s very clear this man doesn’t know what he’s doing legally, but is instead driven by rabid ideology that’s making him a laughing stock across the political spectrum.
Republicans end up being exposed for extreme tactics prior to an election that have the specific purpose of disenfranchising minority voters no matter the means or legalities of the tactics.

This is pretty funny really. Batboy(check out the enquirer pics of Batboy…it’s Scott NO doubt!!!) is sueing the Federal Government because they won’t assist him in his illegal, unconstitutional attempt to deny peoples voting and civil rights. Exactly when did they flood the water supply with the LSD anyway?
LSD might have enlightened him before he revealed himself as an ignorant incompetent.
I wonder if the enormity of what is happenning has sunk in to the Pres, the Dems and responsible Repubs. What Scott is doing is challenging the primacy of the Federal governments laws as they apply to the states reinforced by the Supreme Court.
Scott is openly defying the Federal gov’t and DOJ, which is not unusual for him since he has never believed laws he disagrees with apply to him either in private business and now as a Gov.
The fact that the county supervisors so far are unanimous in rejecting Scott that we have averted a much larger crisis. Specifically, If the county supervisors or a portion of them went along with Scott and openly defied the DOJ, would Pres O’Bama send the National Guard or Federal Law enforcement to Florida to uphold the law and prevent wholesale disenfranchisement of major blocs of voters. Make no mistake about this, the Repub party especially the Tea Party wing would like nothing more to see Scott win this and continue his defiance of settled law. Scott and the Tea Party crazies really do want to dismantle the Fed gov’t. Unless the Pres, DOJ the Dems and responsible Repubs hold firm on this this will only escalate to other states controlled by Repub Governors or legislatures, and it will be about all laws they don’t like not just the Voting Rights Act
“and responsible Repubs.”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHGA!!!! STOP IT,STOP IT, YER KILLIN ME HERE!!!!!!
tactics prior to an election that have the specific purpose of disenfranchising minority voters no matter the means or legalities of the tactics.
Let’s break this sentence down into its factual components and its fictional components…..with the Florida official primary on 8/14, the quiet period objection by the DOJ is understandable, but that is subject to legal determination relative to the commencement date, so it makes sense to let the courts decide since this is now in contention. The disclosure of the DOJ rationale is omitted by the author as is the fact that is solely why the county election officials have decided to suspend further determination actions until there is clarification of this quantitative point. There is no qualitative objection as the author appears to wish to suggest.
The US Immigration Service stats rank Florida has having the 5th highest number of illegal immigrants and also disclose that foreign born immigres into Florida from Asia and Europe comprise less than 20% of the total, ergo, the notion that most illegal immigrants are mostly black and Hispanic would come as no great surprise to the mathematically gifted.
Scott has carried an approval rating beginning with a 3 for the last two years running, so the notion that this action has somehow taken a new toll is unfounded. My guess is he will have had enough of Tallahassee by 2014 anyway. Romney trails Obama in Florida by the same couple of percent that is the national figure, so the idea that it is singularly going to be a 2012 issue for Republicans is not yet in any evidence.
I am a rich white guy, who is also a military veteran and those bastards at the polling place make me show photographic identification with a signature before they give me a ballot. Which of you will stand by me with this obvious obstacle to exercising my right to vote?
False arguement. This is regarding ILLEGAL purges of voters lists. If photo ID is required then it is the STATES responsibility to provide FREE photo ID to any citizen…at state cost.
The reason he’s suing dhs is to drop the issue now would be an admission of defeat. The only thing they have left is to sue, so they can pretend to be passionate about the issues. Who knows, maybe they’ll win. Maybe it will end up in front of SCOTUS. Going forward with the suing is a much more productive option than not doing it.
Jim, I disagree with your analysis of motivation. I believe the suit against DHS was merely a taunting device to get DoJ to sue Florida so that the original issue can go to the courts.
As an election year calculation, my guess is more swing voters will sympathetically side with the notion of precluding illegal immigrants from voting than the notion of widescale disenfranchisement of minorities………but what do I know? I don’t know how to think like you guys do.
While admittedly the Pew Center is an arm of the Koch Brothers, they do have this to say……..According to Pew Center on the States study released in February (pdf), approximately 24 million voter registrations in the United States are invalid or inaccurate, over 1.8 million registered voters are dead, and 2.75 million people are registered to vote in more than one state.
I, for one, am glad that the UN Council on Human Rights has been called to look into this matter. Most regular Americans will welcome that with open arms.

Not much apparently.

So after admitting it is from a bullshit, dishonest source you go on to quote it. Interesting.
“I, for one, am glad that the UN Council on Human Rights has been called to look into this matter. Most regular Americans will welcome that with open arms.”
Indeed, let’s really have a disinterested party examine the repugnantklan/teabaggers attempts to disenfranchise millions of citizens.
