Will Sen. Joe Manchin Join the Jailbird?

My message is simple: WTFU. Translated — wake the you-know-what up, there is an earthquake. … I ask: What are you smoking? What are you drinking? What are you snorting or just what in the hell are you thinking? Look around the world — do you see any governments or incumbents winning any elections out there? – Carville: Wake up Democrats; you could lose

Federal prisoner Keith Russell Judd, 49, at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Beaumont, Texas in March 15, 2008. (h/t Buzzfeed)

VOTING FOR A JAILBIRD instead of Pres. Obama, the AP is reporting 4 in 10 voters in West Virginia prefer a criminal white man over our African American president. America should be so proud. Makes you wonder if Sen. Joe Manchin will join his fellow West Virginians, because he’s already hinted he may not support Obama in November. Of course, there’s absolutely no indication Manchin is racist, however, the same cannot be said for many anti-Obama voters.

…A lawyer from Tennessee, John Wolfe, pulled nearly 18,000 votes in the Louisiana primary. In Alabama, 18 percent of Democratic voters chose “uncommitted” in the primary rather than vote for Obama.

Obama’s energy policies and the Environmental Protection Agency’s handling of mining-related permits have incurred the wrath of West Virginia’s coal industry. With the state the nation’s second-biggest producer of this fossil fuel, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Sen. Joe Manchin -both Democrats have championed the industry – have declined to say whether they will support Obama in November.

So, Manchin’s dirty energy ties will keep him from voting for Pres. Obama? He’s a Democratic senator, so you have to wonder what good party affiliation is when you can’t even get your own Blue Dog Dems to vote for you.

When you’re voting for a criminal over a the first African American president the reason is obvious.

That Democrats assume they’ll win in November is understandable given how bad a politician Mitt Romney has proven to be, coupled with the crazy Republican primary die hards have watched over these past months. The problem is that Etch a Sketch politicians have been a staple of our country for a long time, so there’s no reason to believe that voters won’t choose one again.

People are discontented.

But voting for a jailbird?

What puts this all into perspective is that Pres. Obama and the Democratic party chose to have their convention in North Carolina, an anti-union right-to-work state that just passed Amendment One against marriage equality and even civil unions, where Obama will deliver his acceptance speech at Bank of American stadium.

Whatever the considerations in the choice, a lot about Charlotte goes unmentioned: double-digit unemployment, overflowing homeless shelters and North Carolina’s notorious restrictions on labor unions. [...] When the president takes to the podium at the field named for BofA, it ought to be “a moment of mild embarrassment” for his party, says U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, a Tar Heel Democrat. “There’ll probably be a night of wincing,” Miller says. “One of the Obama administration’s greatest vulnerabilities is that they have been seen, correctly, as too inclined to accommodate the banks.” – Huffington Post

The Democratic party simply isn’t what it used to be.

However, according to Gallup recently, Obama has a two-point advantage on voter enthusiasm in swing states right now. So, as much as I appreciate Carville’s partisan freak out, unless Mitt Romney can make a move on Hispanics, I’m just not seeing this the way Carville is. The race remains Pres. Obama’s to lose, though that’s very possible.

Oh, and about Amendment One passing in North Carolina, where the Democratic party is planting their convention flag. Pres. Obama is “disappointed” about the vote. Who exactly is that supposed to impress?

And I would be remiss not to remind your readers of another significant item….perhaps even the ideological Gettysburg of the 2012 campaign season……..the Walker recall in Wisconsin……..based on turnout yesterday, you wouldn’t have even qualified for a binding recall vote…….and, more Rs showed up to vote in a basically uncontested primary than did the Ds on their side.

The liberal GOTV needs more than words on a blog to get something done.

I absolutely love this! You go West Virginia! Because my vote for Spongebob Squarepants actually looks better now. WOO HOO!

Since I’m not voting for Obama or Romney in November, I could care less on first glance. On second glance, I think we are reaching a point where we HAVE get to this point of silliness and insanity to move in a positive direction. I expect even more silliness and insanity no matter who wins in November. If this heads us in the direction of eliminating the electoral college thus forcing presidential candidates to work ALL the states with abandon, then I’m all for it.

Regarding gay marriage, as I said before, no President is going to tackle that issue be it Democrat or Republican. Why? Because the public is not hardcore for gay marriage. I know certain polls say that attitudes are changing, but I feel those polls are for more acceptance of the LGBT community more than a marriage law/amendment. Those votes are popular votes in states and the for now, gay marriage amendments are not popular in 30 states.

  3. cjoblak@hotmail.com May 9, 2012 at 9:45 am #

They obviously don’t like Obama’s energy policy. They are making that point. I’m sure the people that voted for the jailbird know there is no way in hell that person would ever become the POTUS. They want the representative in the Electoral College to vote for Romney.

And you’re right, the Democratic party isn’t what it used to be and hasn’t been for quite awhile and unfortunately, it is still evolving in the wrong direction for me.

Taylor, you got this all wrong. West Virginians voted against Obama, not for the jailbird. It is a protest vote. They are sending a signal, and it has nothing to do with race. Why did you even introduce race into it?

Would you feel better if 40% had voted for Donald Duck?

    • Solo May 9, 2012 at 12:10 pm #

OMG! This vote has nothing to do with race? Meth addicted hillbillies voting for a prison inmate instead of our country’s first African American President has nothing to do with race? LOL!

      • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 1:25 pm #

Did you really just class the entire white population of WV as meth addicted hillbillies? You should be ashamed of yourself.

I’ll say again. The 40% protest vote the citizens of that state cast had nothing to do with race. If you insist that it does, show me the evidence.

      • cjoblak@hotmail.com May 9, 2012 at 1:40 pm #

Wow! Did you really write that?????
All West Virginian’s are Meth addicted hillbillies?????

        Unbelievable.

      • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 1:45 pm #

What about Sen Rockefeller? Is he a meth addicted hillbilly?

      • Sasha May 9, 2012 at 2:07 pm #

        Meth addicted hillbillies.
Such nasty and vile language Solo.
If I was in WVa I would have voted for the prison inmate as well.
You see, there are many who are voting for ABO – anybody But Obama.
I have a feeling those Democrats will be crossing over and voting for Romney or not at all.

Their vote was about jobs, not the color of anyone’s skin.
        Keep telling yourself that….

You really need to log off and get back to your studies Reg.

          Sasha, das raycis.

        • Solo May 9, 2012 at 3:03 pm #

“Vile”? That’s rich coming from the likes of you. I have read some of your posts, you do vile for a living. For the record President Obama doesn’t need to win WV so your “feeling” that those WV Dems will either vote 4 Mittens or stay home matters little. Tell me how does voting for a man in prison help anyone get a job? Face it Barack Hussein Obama is a good President who will get re-elected regardless of what your “feelings” are and regardless of what people in WV think.

          • whitepaw May 9, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

Obama likely wil get re-elected. But suggesting Obama is a good president is quite a stretch.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 3:19 pm #

Are you off your meds again, Solo?

    • Solo May 9, 2012 at 12:42 pm #

You know you’ve won the argument when your opponent says something stupid like, “would you feel better if 40% had voted for Donald Duck”! Donald Duck is a fictional Disney character and wasn’t on the ballot. Thanks for playing though!

      • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 1:29 pm #

Oh, look y’all. Solo just set the rules we are to use to determine who is winning an argument. So glad we don’t have to worry about that one anymore.

Now back to reality. A protest vote can be channeled in any number of ways: by picking a fictional character, by abstaining (meaning voting down ballot but leave the top one blank), by writing in another name, or even by voting for someone as ridiculous as the jailbird. It is still a protest vote.

And shame on you, too, Taylor, for bringing race into this. If someone else had done it, you rightly have called them out for pulling the race card.

        • Solo May 9, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

Denying racism is the new racism. But coming from you, not shocking! That’s what we do in this country, deny something that staring you in the face. I wonder if you would anyone get away with denying homophobia.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 3:21 pm #

Denying racism is the new racism.

Oh, that’s a cute one. You jack-booted thugs can stomp around all you want trying to crush and silence the rest of us with your incessant cries of racism, but all you do is make us detest you and want to work against you even more.

          • whitepaw May 9, 2012 at 3:23 pm #

No one is denying that racism exists… It just cannot be blamed for everything… That is a big problem today… people throwing out the racist label so quickly.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 3:29 pm #

Exactly, WP. They throw out that charge as a very first defense. It has lost its meaning and just makes the chargers look foolish and desperate.

          • Solo May 9, 2012 at 5:36 pm #

Rick r u actually accusing me of trying to silence people? Aren’t you the one who said Al Sharpton should be off the air because you didn’t like all the reporting he was doing on the Trayvon Martin case? Again for the record, I don’t care that your loath or detest me. The reason I come here is to poke people like you in the eye. You telling me you don’t like me just made my day. Time is on the side of people like me, not people like you.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 5:39 pm #

Sharpton should be off the air but not for the reasons you mentioned.

          • Cujo359 May 9, 2012 at 10:57 pm #

Denying racism is the new racism.

Too bad the Middle Ages are over. You missed your calling as a witch douser.

        • whitepaw May 9, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

I agree — This was a protest vote. No one who voted for the jailbird really supports him or thinks he has the slightest chance of becoming POTUS… It was PROTEST.

Likely some let race play a role, but to stereotype all the WVs that voted in the DEMOCRATIC primary for the jailbird as meth addicted hillbillies and racist at that…. well… I think it is just displaying solo’s anger….that always comes out… when someone does not support Obama. Broken record.

          • whitepaw May 9, 2012 at 3:20 pm #

I would not have voted for the jailbird.. I would have left it blank or written someone else’s name in as my protest… But I have to say that the jailbird getting 40% of the DEM vote in WV sends a message.

Does anyone know if Republicans can cross over and vote in the Democratic primary? If so, this may explain why Romney received less votes than Obama… and why there were so many votes for the jailbird.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 3:22 pm #

To be fair, Taylor is the one who introduced racism as a voting motive.

          • fairmindedindependent May 9, 2012 at 4:51 pm #

Hi whitepaw, Independents can vote in the Democratic Primary in West Virginia, I did, but no Republicans can. They can only vote on the Republican ballot. I voted for the “jailbird” as a protest vote.

          • fairmindedindependent May 9, 2012 at 4:59 pm #

Whitepaw, one more note, the reason Romney got less votes than Obama is because Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1. But most Democrats are conserative and are more inline with Republicans.

  5. guyski May 9, 2012 at 11:05 am #

Carville’s rant has some truth to it. That’s why those headlines proclaiming the election in France an anti-austerity vote seems somewhat like hypebole.

Yesterday Huffington Post had a headline ‘The most boring election ever.’ And why shouldn’t it be? As a personal opinion; voters feelings about this election are just about right.

When the media claim that this is the most important election in our lifetime, who are the referring too? Themselves. The Democrat leadership. The Republican powers that be? They really can’t be referring to the average person.

  6. RAJensen May 9, 2012 at 11:35 am #

‘Criminals for Romney 2012′ Joe Mancin won’t endorse Obma for President any more than Obama will forcefulloy speak out supporting gay marriage until the election is over.

Obama issubg a strong endorsement for gay marrAI

    • RAJensen May 9, 2012 at 11:47 am #

      Logged off with out completing my post of correcting for typos.;

Mancin supporting Obama or Obama supporting gay marriage before the election would leave both of them as losers. As a state senator Obama introduced in committee a bill legalizing gay marriage, He isn’t stupid and is not going to go down to defeat by taking a strong position on gay marriage alienating blue collar Democratic religious voters. Manchin isn’t stupid either.

Only the extreme Progressives damand loyalty oaths by every candidate. Deviation from the cherished commandments is punished by exorcism from the Democratic Party.

The most recent IPSOS poll showed the highest support for Obama among Democratic Presidents since JFK. His 83% approval by Democratics is a level of support that Clinton never had.

The Obama haters of the extreme lefitist chattering class isn’t even needed. Go vote for the socialist workers party who more accurately reflect your beliefs.

      • Solo May 9, 2012 at 12:24 pm #

The chattering class just doesn’t get that they no longer hold sway in the Democratic Party anymore. President Obama will win re-election for one simple inescapable reason. Like President Obama most democratic voters given a choice will choose being a practical winner over being a principled loser. The Jane Hamsher’s and the Arrianna Huffington’s of the world simply refuse to accept the fact that elections in this country are won in the middle. You only have to look at what is going on in Massachettes to see what I am talking about. One would think that a diehard lefty like Elizabeth Warren running in a deep blue state would be way ahead but she isn’t, she is in a dead heat with Republican Scott Brown.

        • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 1:32 pm #

I’ll go with the principled loser if being in the practical camp groups me with people like Solo.

Oh, Solo, I haven’t told you in a while: Get that thang outta yer mouth so that we can hear ya! Don’t yer jaws get tard!

          Solo love her some Obama.

          • Solo May 9, 2012 at 3:18 pm #

President Obama just came out in favor of people like you being able to get married. You cling to that Obama hate if you like. It will be your undoing! Haters are always done in by their own hate.

          • Rick Roberts May 9, 2012 at 3:27 pm #

I just read the news. That’s excellent. Good for him and for all of us. Now let’s see some follow through. We already know he knows how to do rhetoric. A very good start though.

But, yes, I am very happy he has stepped away that ridiculous evolving nonsense.

And can you please stop with the hating nonsense? We don’t hate the man. Many right wingers genuinely hate him, but the Marshans here who criticize him do not hate him. Can you try to grant us that? Just try.

      • jinbaltimore May 9, 2012 at 1:37 pm #

We can always count on Goldilocks, for the “Baby Bear” position.

But thanks for reminding me of Clinton and better times…if only we could have had another in 08.

Oh well, racists such as yourself prevented that (sigh).

  7. spincitysd May 9, 2012 at 3:46 pm #

Meh, I’m not panicing, it’s an election in West By-God Virginia, and the Mullet demographic there is a big f***ing deal. That mullet on Keith Russell Judd must have been good for at least 200,000 votes.

All business up front and party in the back! Just look at that thing; holy guacamole! :?:

  8. spincitysd May 9, 2012 at 4:27 pm #

More seriously, Obama got his clock cleaned in W Va in 2008, both in the primary and the general, so this result does not surprise me at all. W Va is very rural, very white and very Southern. It is bleeding residents like their is no tomorrow, mostly the young, which means every year it gets older, more bitter, and much more conservative. Outside the coal patch there is no economy to speak of; just grinding poverty and minimum wage jobs. That makes for very volatile politics

The only way any state-wide politician of the Donkey Party has a fighting chance is to run as fast and as far away from the National Party as they can. Rural White Evangelical voters are not Barry’s demographic; never have been, never will be. Manchin has to appeal to those voters, or he is toast. Manchin is a junior Senator so he does not have the option that Robert Byrd did of tossing Federal trinkets to the residents of Wild, Wonderful, West Virginia. That will force Manchin to stress his difference with Obama on matters both social and economic.

Even if Manchin survives 2012, I don’t see any future for either him or the Democratic Party in W Va; Demographic shifts in the state will eventually turn it Red.

This is not about inbreeding, racist hillbillies boys and grils. This about a state that is economically, socially and demographically imploding. This is a state that is ripe for the politics of resentment; for far-right / reactionary populism. While race resentment is part of the mix of right-wing populism, it only one part of a political system that defines itself by who and what it hates, what it is against; not by who or what it supports.

    • cjoblak@hotmail.com May 10, 2012 at 9:53 am #

      Spun out of your mind,

‘While race resentment is part of the mix of right-wing populism, it only one part of a political system that defines itself by who and what it hates, what it is against; not by who or what it supports.’

you are so full of shit, with that statement. You’re as bad as Solo calling all West Virginians meth addicted hillbillies.

  9. Real American May 10, 2012 at 4:34 pm #

How could 6 people out of 10 get it wrong? They probably couldn’t decide on which CRIMINAL they wanted to run for President and they picked the one who has almost finished his sentence.
