Tennessee Poised to Approve Anti-Evolution Law

(d) Neither the state board of education, nor any public elementary or secondary school governing authority, director of schools, school system administrator, or any public elementary or secondary school principal or administrator shall prohibit any teacher in a public school system of this state from helping students understand, analyze, critique, and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories covered in the course being taught. – Tennessee SENATE BILL 893

Stuck on stupid and proud of it.

From Think Progress, we get the latest idiocy from the religious ostriches in America.

Evolution is about to become enshrined in law as one of the “scientific weaknesses” a teacher can challenge in the classroom.

And people wonder why our economy is in the crapper and that jobs available no one has the skills to perform.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, a Republican, wants to “protect teachers” at the cost of knowledge.

China thanks him.

America is in a nosedive. There are far too many people in this country — very sane people by most objective standards — except that they hold a firm belief in a literal interpretation of the Bible. And this belief causes them to support policies that will help fulfill Biblical prophecies that they view as necessary to bring about Armageddon.

These may not be your typical tea-partier, but people who are willing to vote against their own self interests in the interest of preparing the way for Jesus (Jah-hee-zus) to come again. They firmly believe that things *have* to get worse before they can get paradisaical. They are generally Republicans.

If we do not take this threat seriously, and we do not, these people are going to kill us all if we don’t get serious about fighting their brand of deliberate irrationalism. It’s not a matter of religious tolerance to let them go on enforcing their views; it’s a matter of suicide, because their policies are suicidal. They want to destroy mankind, because they literally believe that destroying mankind is the way to salvation.

I’ve friends in TN who have been fighting this bill all along, as well as others equally as bad. For that matter, I know people in TX, MN, OH, and NC, among others, who are doing the same kind of thing. It’s all part of a long-running battle, that certainly began before the Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, etc., but that era marks the beginnings of a quite successful effort by the “Religious Right” to win elected positions, from local school boards to state legislatures to DC.

For all those, across the nation — most definitely including in “the South” — who’ve been engaged in the ongoing efforts to prevent and/or limit such legislation, I’m grateful. That includes LGBT equality advocates, but certainly isn’t limited to them.

As for the portion of the bill quoted, don’t you just love how they used “scientific” three times?
