The media is at least reporting now on Mormon conversions on the dead, especially that of well known Jews. Yet the media still won’t ask Mitt Romney about this practice. Romney might be our next president. There is a problem in his church with converting deceased Jewish people. Yes LDS condemns the practice every time a story comes out, but it keeps going on.
Recall Daniel Pearl? The journalist murdered on camera after 9-11? Well a LDS church has converted him, outraging yet again many. Daniel’s parents have reacted:
Pearl’s parents, Judea and Ruth, said it was “disturbing news’’ to learn that Mormons had baptized their son, in a rite that they understand was meant to offer him salvation.
“To them we say: We appreciate your good intentions but rest assured that Danny’s soul was redeemed through the life that he lived and the values that he upheld,’’ Judea and Ruth Pearl said in an e-mail. “He lived as a proud Jew, died as a proud Jew, and is currently facing his creator as a Jew, blessed, accepted and redeemed. For the record, let it be clear: Danny did not choose to be baptized, nor did his family consent to this un-called-for ritual.’’
Pearl’s wife Mariane has now called for Romney to use his stature to help end this practice once and for all:
“It’s a lack of respect for Danny and a lack of respect for his parents,’’ she said.
She said she agreed with Wiesel that Romney could use his stature within the church to speak out against the baptism of Jews. “Mitt Romney could do that, just in order to apologize as a member of the church to the families, for whom it’s extremely upsetting,’’ she said.
So Elie Wiesel and the Pearl family in the last two weeks has asked Mitt Romney to stand up against the this practice. Yet still the media has yet to fully press Romney on this matter. This is the most powerful office on earth. There is a seriously offensive issue going on with some members of his own church that is causing great pain to a great many families. How much longer can these news stories come out before Romney must face his church and the American public on this matter?
You cannot truly believe in separation of church and state while asking a candidate to disavow something his church does or does not do. If we do indeed strive to have a secular government then the only issue is what Mr. Romney does while in said government. His religious life and private life are his own concern. By constantly focusing on his religious beliefs we are being two faced; we say we want a separation of church and state while at the same time forcing Mr. Romney to publicly discuss his religious faith.
