Summit, Double Speak, and Social Security

Photobucket

If Gov. Jindal is the Republican hope, we have nothing to worry about. Seeing him on “Meet the Press” yesterday, his circular stimulus rhetoric bit him at every answer. His explanation for not taking the federal money was ludicrous, proved by both Governors Crist and Schwarzenegger.

But now that President Obama’s “financial responsibility summit” has begun, health care and Social Security can’t be far behind. You’ve got to love that framing. Already it’s being telegraphed that whatever ideas come out of it are good, with critics having to defend themselves before the debate begins.

However, the money quote (and tell) of the day comes from a Blue Dog:

Social Security “was a critical issue before we got into this crisis,” Representative Ellen O. Tauscher, a California Democrat and chairwoman of the New Democrats coalition of House moderates, said in an interview. “Now it’s one of those things — the question is, is it a nice-to-have or a have-to-have?” She said she would favor having a bipartisan group take up the issue and devise a plan “that doesn’t get delivered until perhaps a year from now.”

Stay awake. Political poker at play.
