UPDATE: Steele Apologizes
Discussing his position on embryonic stem
cell research with Baltimore Jewish leaders yesterday, Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele
said he is “concerned about the destruction of human life” and made
a comparison between the controversial science and experiments done on Jews
during the Holocaust. “You of all folks know what happens when people decide
they want to experiment on human beings, when they want to take your life and
use it as a tool,” said Steele, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate,
to a crowd of about 40 at a Baltimore Jewish Council board meeting. “I
know that as well in my community, out of our experience with slavery, and so
I’m very cautious when people say this is the best new thing, this is going
to save lives.” To

Michael Steele has taken to channeling Dr. Dobson.
“In World War II, the Nazis experimented
on human beings in horrible ways in the concentration camps, and I imagine,
if you wanted to take the time to read about it, there would have been some
discoveries there that benefited mankind.” – Dr. Dobson of Focus on the

First, about my morning… As people who listen to my podcasts know, sound has been an issue
that I’ve wanted to change for quite a while. That’s what I’ve been doing all
morning, thus the infrequency of the posting so far today. It’s complete and
next week my podcasts will go to a new level regarding sound. There are more
upgrades in other aspects still to come, but the sound was the biggie. Anyway,
is running for Senate in Maryland. He’s been a guest on Bill Maher’s HBO show, as
well as other interview outlets and is a seasoned politico
When I read about his comments on stem cells in the report above,
frankly, I was stunned. How could anyone be so ignorant, so flippantly callous?
Comparing stem cell research to the killing of millions of Jews?
As far as I’m concerned, Mr. Steele just entered the Ann Coulter category of
wild-eyed, Dobson sucking rhetoric. After all, Dobson compared the medical research
done in concentration camps to maybe offering new discoveries that might benefit
mankind. Isn’t that the same thing as what stem cell research offers? Killing
a human being to benefit mankind?
Geez, I can hardly write and post the above without hitting the delete key, but it makes the fundamental point.
This is what has happened to the Republican Party, with people
like Michael Steele kissing the ring of the right-wing religious kooks in order
to win a seat in the Senate.
Barry Goldwater would spit in Steele’s eye.
