WELCOME TO my first post celebrating independent authors and a few of the people I’ve met during my first year in fiction.
Self-publishing is no longer where it was when I first made the jump in 2000. That’s long before I had two non-fiction books traditionally published. Back then, it was like having a scarlet SP on your chest. In 2016, I made the jump into indie authorship, publishing my first racy romantic thriller.
Indie authors have made remarkable strides the last few years.
The day my book got to the number one spot on the psychological thriller best seller list, I knew it finally bumped The Girl On The Train off the perch it had practically owned for the last year. That was a big deal for me. Mostly because my book is self-published. Any self-published author knows how difficult it is to compete with other indie books, not to mention, traditionally published ones. – Eva Lesko Natiello, author of The Memory Box
Ms. Natiello’s book brings me to the subject of reviews, the lifeblood of all authors. Peruse any Facebook author’s group and you’re likely to find an author distressed about a lousy review on Amazon. Out of around 1,048 reviews for Natiello’s The Memory Box, 31% are 3-star reviews or lower, but it didn’t stop her from becoming an award-winning author. Ever looked at the reviews for Gone Girl? Out of around 43,000 reviews, 31% of reviewers gave Gillian Flynn’s book a 3-star or below, 27% gave her a 4-star; 42% gave the book a 5-star. Both of these books are huge bestsellers, one of them a blockbuster film.
Speaking of “bestsellers,” Amazon & KDP are now vetting bestsellers. And in case you were wondering, Amazon remains the biggest publisher of indie books. It’s not even close.
In 2016, Amazon’s algorithm was deconstructed and demystified a bit, helping indie authors make further gains.
Independent authors are giving publishing houses headaches. We’re collaborating, testing social media marketing in ways traditional publishers aren’t, and learning how to cultivate readers who want the hottest thing in book publishing today: Indie authors turning genres inside out by testing boundaries and learning to produce quality manuscripts that rival anything in legacy publishing.
Every author below has a FREE BOOK for you.
These authors are serious about their craft, work diligently to create what readers in their genre want, and give a lot of value through a selling price that’s hard to beat.
Indie authors are so hot that publishing houses can no longer afford to ignore their competition.
