According to one highly placed source, last night, Ailes sent out the now-famous statement mocking Trump as being scared to meet with the “Ayatollah” and “Putin” if he became president. “That was Roger 100 percent,” the source explained. “A lot of people on the second floor” — where top Fox executives work — “didn’t think it was a good idea.” – Gabriel Sherman [New York Magazine]
HIS HAND was shaking at one point when Bill O’Reilly begged Donald Trump to appear in the Fox News Channel’s debate tonight. O’Reilly did everything he could, even breaking a pledge not to ask whether Donald Trump might still appear tonight, which Trump called him on. All the host of FNC’s “flagship” show could do was regroup.
Megyn Kelly may be at the center of the combat but it’s really about testosterone. She talked to Time magazine on Tuesday.
“This is probably Debate 501. We’ve moved past Debate 101,” Kelly said. As such, her questions are going to be even tougher.
But that doesn’t mean she’s going out on limbs or trying to trick candidates, she said. “I won’t be asking any questions to which I don’t know the answers,” she said. It’s an approach she brings to the anchor chair after years as an attorney. “It’s your journalistic responsibility. It’s a security blanket,” she said.
[…] She added that she remains disappointed that the Democrats didn’t partner with Fox News for one of their debates. “They’re crazy not to come over here. We have proven that we are not in the tank for anyone,” Kelly said. “It’s going to be fair, if they did it.”
As short clip reveals some of the exchange but not the entirety of what happened. It was the most remarkable interview I’ve watched Bill O’Reilly do right up through the moment he tried to rescue himself by mentioning all the milkshakes he’s bought Donald Trump over the years they’ve known each other.
Roger Ailes is obviously losing it. Bob Beckel said on CNN, almost under his breath, that Ailes had “health problems” and hadn’t been around much lately.
Stripping away any modicum of professionalism to nurse his personal grudge, Roger Ailes made a fool of himself by trolling Donald Trump and handed the billionaire candidate a reason to never do another debate again.
…and milk shake rescue by O'Reilly at the end. That interview, & their relationship, nakedly exposed for viewers. Extraordinary TV.

Correction: Fox Business Channel was cited as the debate host channel which was incorrect. Fox News Channel hosts both Republican debates tonight.
