STRIPPING DOWN, Tina Fey proves yet again why she’s a goddess. Jim Messina once again illustrates why Hillary Clinton has him on her team. Then there’s Jeb… W. as his foreign policy advisor? …and we finally see the difference between how the Clinton Foundation gets covered versus Chris Christie wallowing in Iowa hog industry cash, compliments of Jon Stewart.
Four Words: Amy. Schumer. Birth. Control.
One story I cited in yesterday’s Volume 5 podcast, debt-free college, which Hillary’s campaign head Robby Mook first mentioned on CNBC this week, has now made it onto a web page and it’s HUGE. Immigration policy huge for Democrats looking forward. Senator Chuck Schumer jumped on it in theory in April, and Rep. Keith Ellison is leading the way, along with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, who has the activist heft to spread it wide.
A group of two dozen young activists working out of homes and coffee shops around the country has achieved something rather unusual: mainlining an idea into the upper echelons of the Democratic Party—including its top presidential contenders—in just four months.
The phrase “debt-free college” was hardly present in the national political lexicon until the Progressive Change Campaign Committee launched a campaign in January to push Democrats to support the idea of federal assistance to help Americans graduate from college without debt.
[..] “When it comes to making college affordable, I’m hopeful that debt-free college is the next big idea,” Schumer said.
About UK’s Election Day, via Politico, because as an Irish-Scot, it’s long past time the United Kingdom grew up.
2. It’s bye-bye Scotland. Let auld acquaintance be forgot
The Scottish National Party has swept Scotland, which is now the only democratic European country that is a one-party state. It is only a matter of time before Scotland is independent. (Which party, one wonders, will be the opposition there when that happens?) This is a time for lamentation and sweeping assertions: 2015 will go down as one of those rare seminal years in British history, when Everything Changed, alongside 1066 (the Norman Conquest); 1215 (the Magna Carta); 1531 (Henry VIII’s break with Rome); 1649 (the regicide of Charles I); 1688 (the Glorious Revolution); 1877 (the declaration of old Vic as Empress of India); 1945 (the start of the Welfare State); and 1973 (the accession to the European Economic Community). 2015. The end of the Union. The end, in fact, of the British Empire.
One happy man is Jim Messina, now of Hillary2016, who knew what was going to happen even if the antiquated polling models being used outside of his zone of wonkery still don’t get how people live today. …and, let’s face it, there really wasn’t anyone making an impassioned cased for why Cameron should be pitched out, and Brits didn’t want Scots in charge of Westminster. Congratulations to Messina and his candidate, David Cameron, who got the British economy back from the brink, even if the worst is still ahead.
Mr. Messina, time to come home. Hillary Clinton 2016 awaits!
The dumbest thing I’ve heard this week, however, came out of Jeb Bush’s mouth. His brother, the man who handed Hamas power through an election that Palestinians told W. they weren’t ready to have, is now his advisor on the Middle East.
Jeb Bush cited his brother, former President George W. Bush, as one of his main advisers on the Middle East in a private meeting in Manhattan on Tuesday, according to three people who attended the off-the-record event.
Still wondering about the obscene double standard between Hillary Clinton versus how Republican big money, aka Chris Christie, is covered? Jon Stewart explains in the video below.
Have a wonderful weekend. For you dads out there who also act as mothers, as my husband has done for decades. Happy Mother’s Day to you, too.
As for women like me who are child-free, enjoy the life you’ve chosen that (finally) no longer has to be explained!
