“After 20 years and multiple court orders to remove the trespass cattle, [rancher Cliven] Bundy owes the American taxpayers in excess of $1 million. The BLM will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially,” a statement from the bureau said. “We ask that all parties in the area remain peaceful and law-abiding as the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service work to end the operation in an orderly manner.” [Fox News]
AFTER AN escalating situation reached a boiling point, the BLM pulled back “in order to avoid violence and help restore order.” A fight over rancher Cliven Bundy illegally grazing cattle on federal land gave conservatives a rallying cry, because they evidently cannot discern what a property line means.
The Daily Caller declares “victory” for Cliven Bundy.
John Hinderaker, who posted the photo above, doesn’t seem to understand the concept of federal lands, illegal grazing, or the Endangered Species Act.
If you want to know just how far right the cheerleading has gotten on this one, Alex Jones is in the middle of it, so that should tell you something.
The BLM and protesters were clearly at a confrontational point that needed to be deescalated, which is exactly what the BLM did.
Cliven Bundy continues to ignore what has been reported as “multiple court orders,” because he has been trespassing, allowing his cattle to graze on land he does not own, nor will he pay the fees required to gain access.
The dispute that triggered the roundup dates to 1993, when the BLM cited concern for the federally protected tortoise. The agency later revoked Bundy’s grazing rights.
Bundy claimed ancestral rights to graze his cattle on lands his Mormon family settled in the 19th century. He stopped paying grazing fees and disregarded several court orders to remove his animals.
BLM officials, however, say Bundy owes more than $1.1 million in unpaid grazing fees.
The law is against Bundy, even if the protesters had every right to assemble. The confrontation escalated when police reportedly used stun guns against one of Bundy’s sons.
Bundy’s allowing his cattle to graze on land he doesn’t own, but also won’t pay for the right. That’s all this is about.
