Porn professor and feminist Hugo Schwyzer’s epic meltdown.

THE AMAZING story of Pasadena porn professor, feminist and fraud Hug Schwyzer, who gives an interview with the Daily Beast, really is a soap opera made for the tabloids. The movie cannot be far behind. This story has been playing out over the last couple of weeks.

Pasadena City College is spinning.

Pasadena City College Trustee Bill Thomson said Thursday that the personal mental breakdown of self-titled “porn professor” Hugo Schwyzer as well as the controversy surrounding his class on pornography merit a second look at college policy. Thomson said he did not think the class Schwyzer called “Navigating Pornography” was appropriate and that it should prompt a closer look at the types of courses the college offers. Hugo Schwyzer was a tenured professor and has become a respected go to voice on porn, feminism and dating, which includes opining that men should date women their own age. Never mind he wasn’t taking his own advice or never had any expertise to be talking about this stuff. Schwyzer wrote for The Atlantic and Jezebel, but never published in any serious journal.

His meltdown came on Friday and played out on Twitter.

One of my themes has always been that men should leave younger women alone and start to have a greater value in appreciating their female peers””that men in their 30s and 40s should be dating women in their 30s and 40s; sort of challenging men to see as sexually desirable women who are their own age. I wrote a piece for The Atlantic on that that got a lot of attention. But the very same week I wrote that I was sleeping with a 23-year-old affiliated with the porn industry, not a student of mine, but who I met through the porn class. And of course, I was also sexting. And the age gap I was condemning in my essay was similar to the one with women I was having affairs with. That is not intellectually fraudulent in the sense that I am not making up facts, but it is morally fraudulent in that I am living a life that is deliberately in direct contradiction to what I am recommending. As someone who has expertise in feminism, pornography, sex, dating and marriage, you can imagine my reaction when I started following this stunning story. That it ended with an epic meltdown on Twitter and claims of mental illness fits the new media era.
