Rutgers Coach Mike Rice Should Be Fired *Update*

[UPDATE] “I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.” – Mike Rice Fired

In addition to Rice’s physical actions seen in the practices, Rice calls Rutgers players “f—-ts,” “m—–f—–s,” “p—–s,” “sissy b—–s,” and “c—s,” among other epithets. [ESPN]

rutgers

FEW WILL ever forget Bobby Knight and his explosive antics.

The video from ESPN is disgusting and exactly the wrong way to coach a team. Rutgers coach Mike Rice will be fired. It’s the only outcome for such outrageous behavior.

Whistleblower Eric Murdock, featured in the ESPN video, was fired for reporting Mike Rice’s conduct last summer. It puts the priorities of Rutgers University in clear focus.

It’s this type of institutional rot that led to the pedophile scandal at Penn State.

It is sad to learn that in 2013 cretins like Mike Rice are still in charge of “building character” for young men. Let’s not pretend, he was caught on video, but he is not the only coach today with that mindset.Divison I athletes are nothing more than property of the university. These athletes that generate billions of dollars for colleges, television, Las Vegas, and apparel companies like Nike, should be allowed to unionize and be paid a stipend of $20,000 each season. Louisville is under NO legal obligation to extend Kevin Ware’s scholarship beyond this season or to pay any of his medical bills from his tragic injury.

As money for higher education dries up, but money for sports increases, these things will get worse, not better. Neither Rutgers nor Penn State is unique in that regard.

(Disclosure: Penn State grad here – BSEE-long,long time ago. :) )
