Women, the GOP, and the PBS Documentary “MAKERS: Women Who Make America” [Videos]

In a closed-door conference meeting on Wednesday, Cantor told one GOP member that if they blocked the Senate-passed Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) from coming to the floor, they’d cause “civil war” in the ranks. [National Review]

THE TIMING of the PBS documentary “MAKERS: Women Who Make America” is perfect, which is also accompanied by a terrific interview of Judy Woodruff with Gloria Steinem, which is below.

The PBS documentary illustrating the battles for equality women have had over the years comes at the moment when Republicans failed to scuttle the Violence Against Women Act extension.

The GOP has lost the privilege to be the majority party in this country through the actions of their legislators.

If you watch “MAKERS” you’ll remember, or perhaps learn for the very first time, why all of this matters so much.

Interesting. Looks to me like GOP leaders are aware of the demographic trap they’re in. Being the party of angry white guys isn’t a good path for a major party anymore, particularly when it seems determined to confine itself to being the party of stupid angry white guys. Heck, the Democratic Party is what the Republicans used to be, there’s really not much point in trying to appeal to a group that wants to drive everyone else away.

The Senate vote on VAWA a couple weeks ago was the first clue that the GOP was susceptible to persuasion on this issue. This looks like another.
