They’ve since changed the photo (see the original at HuffPo), but not before it was noticed and began its social media distribution. Fox News used a wedding photo of Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorage, Alaska to accompany an article by Suzanne Venker, To be happy we must admit that men and women aren’t ‘equal’.
Jessica Valenti is among those who caught the obviously accidental use of a same-gender couple with an article that claims “feminism … resulted in mass confusion,” with the result that “men and women have no idea who’s suppose to do what.” Valenti:
Shhhh…no one tell Fox News that the ‘wedding kiss’ picture they’re using to accompany a piece about traditional gender roles is actually of a same sex couple. …
UPDATE: Fox News has taken the image down
The photo (attributed to AP) was used at HuffPo as one among several with the article Valentines Day Around The World:
(Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorag, Alaska) chose the Empire State Building to wed on 14 February … .
These two women became the first same-sex couple to be married at the New York city landmark.
One entirely predictable response to this story, in reference to the suit clad McArthur: She looks like a man! Another, along the same lines: The gorgeous bride just needs to do it with a real man! “Traditionally” speaking, that fits for still large numbers of people. Of course, if you understand equality outside the male / female (and it must be in that order) divide, then it’s not fitting at all.
