They’ve since changed the photo (see the original at HuffPo), but not before it was noticed and began its social media distribution. Fox News used a wedding photo of Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorage, Alaska to accompany an article by Suzanne Venker, To be happy we must admit that men and women aren’t “˜equal’.
Jessica Valenti is among those who caught the obviously accidental use of a same-gender couple with an article that claims “feminism … resulted in mass confusion,” with the result that “men and women have no idea who’s suppose to do what.” Valenti:
Shhhh”¦no one tell Fox News that the “˜wedding kiss’ picture they’re using to accompany a piece about traditional gender roles is actually of a same sex couple. …
UPDATE: Fox News has taken the image down
The photo (attributed to AP) was used at HuffPo as one among several with the article Valentines Day Around The World:
(Lela Mc Arthur and Stephanie Figarelle of Anchorag, Alaska) chose the Empire State Building to wed on 14 February … .
These two women became the first same-sex couple to be married at the New York city landmark.
One entirely predictable response to this story, in reference to the suit clad McArthur: She looks like a man! Another, along the same lines: The gorgeous bride just needs to do it with a real man! “Traditionally” speaking, that fits for still large numbers of people. Of course, if you understand equality outside the male / female (and it must be in that order) divide, then it’s not fitting at all.
