In Your Face Photo: President Obama Skeet Shooting

President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David, Md., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.
(Photo: Pete Souza, The White House)

ANY OTHER requests?

The Weekly Standard didn’t say a peep other than to post the picture with the description. They’ve been rendered mute by the release of the photo.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn challenged President Obama, saying she could beat him at skeet shooting.

Who cares?

It wouldn’t matter if President Barack Obama hit the bulleye unloading a whole magazine. Some Republicans and N.R.A. types would still contend he is a secret Muslim “sympathizer” and out to take their guns. He’ll never win with the right.

From one liberal gun owning family, thank you, Mr. President.

This whole obsession by the NRA in findings ways on damaging Obama image over the gun control debate…has become pathetic and hilarious. These people need to spend their time trying to assist in stopping nut jobs from owning guns and hurting children…and quit wasting energy on findings ways to embarrass the president. But then again it does tell you their true priorities in life.

      Well said. Seconded.

The very fact that he’s left-handed probably will be interpreted by some to “prove” he’s a leftwingsocialistislamistunamericanunchristianextremist … Add to that I think that’s a Nike shirt he’s wearing. I have no idea what kind of sunglasses, jeans and watch he’s also wearing, but are these genuine, real American gun owner apparel? Aren’t cammies more authentic? For that matter, wouldn’t a semi-automatic rifle of some sort be better proof yet that Mr. Obama isn’t as he’s-gonna-take-our-guns-away determined as the NRA and like-thinking folks insist? Dressing for the role is so important. But then, even wearing a business suit didn’t help Mr. LaPierre when he recently testified, so maybe I’m reading too much into the skeet shooting clothing thing. Still, that kind of analysis seems to fit so well with so much of what we’re hearing …

Whatever, I’m fairly certain Obama and company know he isn’t going to convince anyone who doesn’t want to be convinced about, well, anything, certainly including Obama’s position on guns. But, PR and marketing and sound bites and news cycles, and an occasional in-your-face photo op, are very much a part of our bipartisan political news world.

Serious — as in thousands of deaths by way of guns every year — conversations are happening. I’m sadly skeptical, though, that significant legislative steps will actually take place. Once again, I hope I’m wrong about my guesses.

      “he’s left-handed”

      AH-AH!!! Caught him red-handed! I told you he was a leftie-commie-pinko-Muslim sympathizer!

      ;)

In your face? Please. The very fact that WH spokespeople were doing “take that!” statements speaks volumes in and of itself. One picture does not a skeet-shooter make.”All the time,” remember? It was a stupid thing to say and I’m surprised it took them nearly a week to find a photo, especially as this is from last August.

    • DaGoat February 3, 2013 at 9:14 am #

They probably found the photo right away and then Obama’s inner circle debated for a week over whether releasing it would help or hurt. You’re right, it’s not very likely Obama was skeet-shooting “all the time” and didn’t bother to mention it for four years. His comment was silly, and the picture is a continuation of the silliness.

What’s more is whether Obama fires guns or not is really immaterial to the gun debate. It’s a distraction, and Obama made it more of a distraction.

  4. jjamele February 2, 2013 at 7:31 pm #

Thank you, Beth. This is Pandering 101, and it shows how powerful the NRA is still perceived to be that the President would do this.

We don’t see him holding a gun for five years and two elections- but now we do? Ugh.

Maybe Obama will get himself photographed pushing a wheelchair-bound senior down a flight of steps to show he can be as ruthless with entitlements next.

And “in your face” was that a reference to the Vice Torturer in Chief?

      Biden?

  7. ladywalker68 February 3, 2013 at 1:45 am #

Well, I just have to laugh at all of the hysteria of the gun nuts. Obama is only pushing for what 90% of the public wants, which does NOT include taking everybody’s guns away, but the way the bat-shit crazy wing of the gun owners are acting, you would think he is sending in the Storm Troopers to do just that.

    • newdealdem1 February 3, 2013 at 11:03 am #

Well said, ladywalker68. And, the hypocrisy of their dear leader (and if anyone deserved that onerous title other than the erstwhile leader of North Korea, it’s the public voice of the NRA) it’s Wayne LaPierre is infinite. In 1999, he was all for background checks at all venues including at gun shows and now he’s all komikaze on eradicating that from his now absolute, no compromise advocacy. We all know he and his cronies are doing everything they can to scare the bejesus out of gun owners who belong to (or not but who are potential members of) the NRA. He well knows that a significant majority of NRA members are at least for background checks and are more than willing to compromise.

LaPierre doesn’t even speak for the majority of gun owners in this country or a majority of members of the NRA. He is the spokesperson for those who manufacture guns or to be more exact those who produce assault weapons. Crony capitalism at it’s lethal worst.

Then there are those who are members of the NRA who agree with LaPierre and who believe his propaganda (aided and abetted by the jackals and weasels over at Fake-ass Noise) so that their omnipresent paranoia of Obama as a tyrant (who wants to destroy America) wanting to steal one’s constitutional heritage boils over in rage and hysteria.

And, in the meantime, these same people (many of whom are Tea Partiers) have been sold a bill of false goods about the constitution by every charlatan and con man/woman out there from Fake-Ass Noise to Limbaugh to Coulter to Michelle Bachmann and the thugs who now dominate the GOP.

Here is one example from a few years ago of what a large number of Tea Party types (who have done so much damage to our current political system who won’t give an inch of their bowdlerized beliefs of their rights) – never their obligations, btw, like rational compromise either in gun control or legislation – (those who have been propagandized to by the charlatans and con men/women that their “freedoms” and “liberties” are being squashed and obliterated by Tyrant Obama. As former SOS Hillary Clinton recently said:

“”There are some people in politics and in the press who can’t be confused by the facts,” Clinton told the Associated Press in her final one-on-one interview before she steps down from her post at the State Department on Friday. “They just will not live in an evidence-based world. And that’s regrettable. It’s regrettable for our political system and for the people who serve our government in very dangerous, difficult circumstances.””

Here is that interview with one Tea Partier which fits right in with what Clinton spoke about:

      http://tinyurl.com/25msngm

While I don’t believe that Obama’s staff should have responded to the jackals (in the media or in politics) about his skeet shooting, given the deeply broken America we now live in of which this skeet shooting “episode” is another example, and given how he has been depicted by those who will not and do not live in the evidenced-based world, and how some in the media feed on that schism (and CNN is just as at fault as Fake-Ass Noise), I understand why his staff would respond as they did. I don’t agree with it as it just feeds the madness, but I understand it especially as the noise about it by the media has gotten unbearably loud.

        Preach it!

  8. sasasa February 3, 2013 at 1:57 am #

Poor shooting form leads me to question he actually shoots, if this photo is even real.
Also pay attention to the left port, even though the top port has gasses coming out of it, none are coming out of the left which is physically impossible. This picture is photoshopped, and already has been pointed out by many other sites.

Also notice how low he’s shooting. Skeet are thrown up into the sky, not almost parallel with the ground. Also notice, despite a round being “fired” there’s no recoil being exhibited onto his shoulder, which is also physically impossible.

I would also like to point out the gasses vented from the top port are whisping out like steam from a tea kettle instead of being violently blasted outwards.

    • secularhumanizinevoluter February 3, 2013 at 3:09 pm #

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Do you actually read what you type before you post it? I mean I don’t want to be RUDE or anything but I think this is not only the FUNNIEST thing posted here about this but also about the stupidest!!!

Poor shooting form leads me to question he actually shoots, if this photo is even real.

Absolutely *the* funniest thing I’ve seen written about this photo.

I don’t know how many gun ranges you’ve been in, but I’ve been in just a few & I rarely see anyone who has any (ahem) “shooting form” at all.

Many of you obviously think Pete Souza, who is the White House official photographer would go along with perpetrating a hoax.

The Obama derangement will *never* end. I’m almost glad, because you guys sure make it entertaining.

    • jjamele February 3, 2013 at 1:12 pm #

It’s becoming depressingly obvious to me that there are only two types of criticism when it comes to President Obama:

      1. Criticism you personally consider to be valid.

      2. Obama Derangement Syndrome (criticism you do not consider to be valid.)

      • Taylor Marsh February 3, 2013 at 1:23 pm #

Frankly, I don’t care what you think. Comments attacking me personally are boring and usually have nothing to do with the subject, so don’t belong in the comments and will be deleted.

I appreciate your readership, but if you don’t like the rules you have a choice and I suggest you exercise it.

        • jjamele February 3, 2013 at 2:49 pm #

Maybe it would be easier to obey the rules if you let us know what they are. Maybe that can be your next ebook: “When It’s Ok To Criticize Obama Without Being Accused of Suffering from Obama Derangement Syndrome.” At least publish a list. Because right now, all we are left with is “when I criticize Obama it’s ok, when you do, well, it’s anyone’s guess, but you’ll find out soon enough.”

For the record, I didn’t question Obama’s use of a gun. I don’t even question the idea that he shoots often. What I question is the timing- at a time when the NRA seems to be on the ropes in the realm of public opinion, the President decides to go with “hey look, I like guns too, which means I’m ok!”

Oops, there’s that Syndrome popping up again. Unless you agree with the criticism. Then it’s fine. Whatever.

          • spincitysd February 4, 2013 at 2:57 pm #

            Sigh jjamele,

As one who does get a tad belligerent from time to time I feel your pain. Still it is Taylor’s site, and if you hang out long enough the rules are pretty clear. Attack the policy not the man. You can even get a little personal if you back up your point. Eg. “you are wrong about X because Y,Z” As long as you are willing to defend your point with cogent arguments and not pure invective you should be OK.

I have been very harsh with Obama and even stated that he should be frog-marched to the Hague for War Crimes; but that comes from a place, and a conviction that the Obama Drone Policy is epically bad, damn near evil.

I can not comment on the offending posts, as they been pulled, so I will let that particular sleeping dog lie. I will note that it does take quite a bit for Taylor to yank you off the boards, take it from one who has a habit of regularly skating on thin ice.

          • jinbaltimore February 4, 2013 at 5:08 pm #

“Attack the policy not the man”

Unfortunately, this is not the magical formula here, either, spincitysd.

As far as I can tell, the current pro-Obama stance here is left over from the inauguration mist. It happened in 09 too, before Obama started DOING things. Eventually, Taylor will find fault with something Obama does and then SEC, et al, will throw the ODS label her way too. These things run in cycles.

        • secularhumanizinevoluter February 3, 2013 at 3:14 pm #

“Frankly, I don’t care what you think. ”

Personals attacks will be deleted. You’ve had 2 deleted today for this reason. I’ve asked everyone, including secular, to stop getting personal in comments and he’s agreed. Attack the poster’s position, not the poster.

“Fangio” is in moderation for the same crap.

As for Obama Derangement Syndrome, when people decide to attack President Obama in a manner that is petty, small and close to nitpicking the skin off the man that is OBS. It’s juvenile to invoke, but it’s hard to resist when reading some comments.

Guns and Immigration are two issues where the current laws on the books need to be enforced, before making up new laws that are not going to be enforced either.

When I read how bad gun violence in Chicago and look at how strict their gun laws are. It is clear to me that these laws will do absolutly nothing. Joe Biden said that if these laws could save one life, it would be worth it. These laws will not save one single life, based on how places with strict gun laws also have high gun related deaths. Biden even admitted the obvious, that these laws he wants passed will not prevent another massaacre.

“Less than 1 percent of the murders in Chicago between 2003-2011 were with what the Chicago Police Department classifies as a “rifle,” which is what an AR-15 would be classified.”

“After a year in which Chicago’s death toll surpassed 500, the bloodshed has continued in 2013 at a rate of more than one killing a day. It was the city’s deadliest January in more than a decade.”

…”The girl, whom local reports identified as Hadiya Pendleton, died when a gunman opened fire on her and about a dozen other teenagers while they were hanging out at a park in Chicago, according to Chicago Police officer Jose Estrada. An honors student, according to family members, rthe sophomore had finished exams at Dr. Martin Luther King College Prep and went to the nearby park.

For Obama, the shooting hits home at a time when he is pushing Congress to enact stricter gun laws that he says would curb not only mass shootings but also everyday gun violence in cities such as his home town of Chicago. So far this year, 42 have been killed, making the month the most deadly January in the city in more than 10 years.”

    • Taylor Marsh February 4, 2013 at 9:53 am #

Do some checking. Many of the gun laws currently on the books have been weakened by right-wing Republican legislators, just the way they have strangled the ATF.

You can NEVER stop a mad man with a gun. Not. Ever.

That doesn’t mean we can’t attack the problem in the most obvious place.

It’s long past time our country had universal background checks for every single purchase, no exceptions. This is a no brainer and is the biggest prize in the gun safety debate and always has been.

This is the biggest statement our politicians can make and the strongest message our country can send on guns. You can own guns, collect them, but in the modern era law enforcement across the country needs to know who has the guns.

    • angels81 February 4, 2013 at 11:35 am #

According to Chicago police, most of the guns being used are coming from out of state were things like back ground checks are very weak. When the states that border yours have weak laws on gun sales, its no wonder your state is having problems. Universal back ground checks would help the flow of out of state guns.
