THE PUNDITS on Fox News Channel, from Bill O’Reilly to Sean Hannity and beyond, could only lie about Secretary Clinton’s testimony, taking her most electrifying quote, but then cutting the following statement she made in order to present a false impression. Jon Stewart shows them out in the video above.
Below is Clinton’s entire quote, which O’Reilly, Hannity and Fox News Channel chose to ignore.
“Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night decided to go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator.” – Secretary Hillary Clinton
James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal couldn’t understand it either, asking, “So it’s “our job to figure out what happened” but it doesn’t make a difference what happened?”
There are no two attacks on U.S. embassies or consulates that mimic another. No two zones are the same; certainly that was the case in Benghazi, Libya. It’s not about the specifics of this particular attack all these months later that is at issue, especially since the circumstances were so unique. It’s making sure our embassies around the world are sufficiently protected so no matter who intends to attack, our foreign service outposts have a security presence that discourages attacks in the first place.
Clinton proved through her testimony, though looking at any budget for the State Department gives the real evidence, that when it comes to our embassies being fortified, Republicans have stood against allocating the funds needed to protect our diplomats and the presence we have in embassies in countries and dangerous zones, particularly in Africa. Republicans prefer bombs and other lethality, rather than to put statecraft and diplomacy, soft power, at the head of the American spear. This includes economic power, especially public and private enterprise partnerships, which Clinton has made central to her mission at State, something Republicans don’t understand or appreciate at all.
Are we to believe that the right, whether it’s on Fox News Channel or even in some quarters of the Wall Street Journal, just aren’t bright enough to figure this out? That they actually didn’t know Clinton’s full quote or what she meant? No doubt some will say they are not.
But it’s actually worse and much more nefarious than that. It’s that Fox and some at the WSJ want to purposefully mislead the American public for partisan gain through bad information. This reveals the bankruptcy in some quarters of our media. Outlets, pundits and individuals who believe the most important thing to do is cause confusion instead of offering facts.
Secretary Clinton was clear. O’Reilly, Hannity and others on Fox News Channel, as well as even a corner of the Wall Street Journal, went out of their way to make it appear she was not.
