Talk About Beyoncé’s Lip Syncing the National Anthem Goes Viral

Beyoncé sang the national anthem at yesterday’s inauguration ceremony for President Obama and received overwhelming praise for her performance, ranging from Business Insider (“It was just amazing”) to TMZ (“f*cking awesome”). But to close observers, it appeared the performer was not singing live. To press seated just below the podium, in front of the “President’s Own” Marine Corps Band, it was evident that the band wasn’t actually playing during the song–even though band director Colonel Michael J. Colburn was conducting energetically and the band members mimicked blowing into their instruments. – Confirmed: Beyoncé Lip-Synced “The Star-Spangled Banner” [Washingtonian]

THIS INSTAGRAM photo was the tell. Showing herself in the studio, it was more evidence that Beyoncé might have planned to lip-sync “The Star-Spangled Banner” all along.

But Jezebel says wait just one minute. A “tipster” tells of a camera person who said Beyoncé could be heard singing full out.

One can hardly blame her that even if she was singing, she preferred the taped version to be the one TV land heard. She’s not Britney Spears, the girl can sing. I’ve seen her in person, at Camp Pendleton before she went solo, and she’s got pipes.

It’s not exactly novel, but Drudge went berserk, so there you have it. The story has now gone viral, which you can see over at Memeorandum.

I noticed something odd about her performance, which was magnified when she pulled her earpiece out. In that setting, not having an earpiece would have been performance suicide. The drama of it was weird to me, which you can see in the video above, but so what?

Both Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor sang live, but you can bet it wasn’t easy. Clarkson was absolutely awesome and for my money stole the show.

Yawn, it’s theater, what do you expect? Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

One can only hope a couple of the repugnantklan/teabagger/UBERChristofascist wankers will blow an aneurism over this and go home to jeebus and give us some peace.

I find nothing wrong with her singing, and no she didn’t lip sync, if you watch her lips it right in time with the words, and lots of singers pull their ear plugs because sometimes they get feedback, one thing is hard to do when lip syncing is to scatter or roll your voice right on key if your lip syncing, and she did roll her voice, but let me say this, so what if she did lip sync its not a national defense matter.

Lip Syncing means you are not actually singing – just moving your mouth. She was obviously singing. I imagine this had more to do with the difficulty of coordinating the band and the soloist who was so far away and all the things that can go wrong in this complicated setting.
