THE LIST of SAG Awards 2013 nominations is out.  As a member of SAG for years (as well as AFTRA before it merged with SAG, AGVA and Actors’ Equity), the Screen Actors Guild nominations interest me more than any other, despite the Hollywood hoopla of the Oscars.

SAG has a terrific pictorial listing of the nominees, which includes Jeff Daniels as the only nod for HBO’s spectacular Newsroom that deserves a lot better than critics have delivered. Javier Bardem is nominated for his brilliant bad buy portrayal in Skyfall, which is also acknowledged for outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble. Nicole Kidman is nominated twice, surprising many for her nod in The Paperboy; and she deserves to win for her stunning performance in HBO’s Hemmingway & Gellhorn, where Kidman steals the starlight. John Hawkes gets his due for his role in The Sessions. And this year, Downton Abbey is sure to give all its competitors, including Homeland, a run for the SAG award.

SAG voters finally acknowledged Damian Lewis and Claire Danes for Homeland, the model for action and TV writing, proving that the artistic community has its biases against some subjects, even when the show and the actors deliver jaw dropping scripts and performances that exceed all expectations.

Julianna Margulies was the only nomination for The Good Wife, a series that has tumbled in quality since its inception, while suffering from interminable programming insanity, with football continually pushing the show out of its time slot. Why Margulies got the nod is questionable, since Archie Panjabi, portraying Kalinda Sharmas, is the one tearing up the screen. As I’ve written, the storyline has collapsed into mind numbing irrelevancy and the show’s potential squandered by programming weenies who have let it linger in limbo on Sunday, while the writers can’t figure out what the central theme of the show is. It long ago quit representing the lusty logo and original intent, though perhaps changes in 2013 will revive it before its canceled.

Lena Dunham and the entire cast was snubbed for Girls, which didn’t make the cut anywhere on the list, something that also proves that SAG voters aren’t exactly savvy when it comes to cutting, edgy cultural bombshells. Veep was also overlooked, but isn’t a very good show.

The Golden Globe nominations list, formulated on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is due out tomorrow.

A partial list of nominations is below.
