AFTER BEING busted for an all white, all male Republican leadership monopoly, with no woman in sight, Speaker John Boehner responds by taking a woman not even on the committee, because there are no women on the last remaining committees without a chairman, and sticking her in the leadership position. Never mind that Rep. Candice Miller is on the homeland security committee and wanted to chair a committee she was actually on! They still picked the white guy over the woman.
But after an election that exemplified the Republican Party’s problem with women, Boehner had to break down and give in.
After taking heat for stacking House committee chair posts with all white men in the next Congress, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) appears to have found his binder full of women. Boehner announced Friday that Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) will chair the House Administration Committee — a committee that Miller wasn’t even on until now. [Huffington Post]
Mitt Romney incurred derision for his “binder full of women” during the election, but at least he had one.
This cosmetic shift was due to the obvious failings of the Republican Party’s continued patriarchy, with the war on women including the GOP’s inability to honor equality in their own ranks. If they can’t do that there’s no way they can offer women an equal place in policy.
At least now they have 1 woman in a leadership position. One.
