My Twitter feed was on fire after an appearance last night on CNN’s AC360, where I said that I thought it was wrong for Mitt Romney to be using his wife as his guide to women’s economic struggles when she “had never worked a day in her life.” – Hilary Rosen
Hilary Rosen stepped out on a ledge yesterday and discovered she was all alone.
It moved Ann D. Romney to join Twitter and respond for the first time.
I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work.
I chose not to have children, not because of the hard work, but because of the type of hard work children require. So, I’m not going to doubt Ann Romney. I’ve seen it in friends and in my own family. Motherhood is a full time job.
Rosen also used her CNN talking head perch to declare there was no war on women, simply because the bluntness makes Obama reelect nervous. This is your Democratic Party, always parsing.
Partisanship doesn’t help women, but neither Ann Romney nor Hilary Rosen care. They’re out for their side, which is why women still don’t have full employment equality and are on their own, because it’s all about political parties and not you. Both Rosen and Romney miss the larger issue.
It’s about what women need today in the 21st century, which revolves around reality that goes well beyond Ann Romney and Hilary Rosen’s 20th century partisan talking points.
From The Shriver Report, back in 2009:
As women move into the labor force, their earnings are increasingly important to families and women more and more become the major breadwinner”“even though women continue to be paid 23 cents less than men for every dollar earned in our economy. Nearly 4 in 10 mothers (39.3 percent) are primary breadwinners, bringing home the majority of the family’s earnings, and nearly two-thirds (62.8 percent) are breadwinners or co-breadwinners, bringing home at least a quarter of the family’s earnings. What’s more, women are now much more likely to head families on their own.
Does Ann Romney know what this statistic means to women? More importantly, does her husband, which is the whole argument for 2012?
Hilary Rosen chose to serve up Ann Romney instead of her husband, which set the trap she walked into herself. It was an amateur partisan mistake that has in the short term resounded to Romney’s benefit.
I could care less as long as women come out on top. But we all know you won’t. Not in this food fight.
This is not the fight Obama reelect wants to have, because Mrs. Romney has framed it beautifully for the ideologues, using the age old argument of stay at home mom working for her family vs. working mom outside the home trying to make ends meet.
“Women are not only the CFO in the household, but they’re the chief purchasing officer.” “” Lisa Caputo, former aide to Hillary Clinton
When my dad died, my mother had to figure out how to make a living with an ambitious 11 year-old daughter with gigantic dreams. But first she had to find the checkbook, because she’d never seen it before. She went to work at a retail outlet called Famous Barr for an hourly wage. The only raises she would ever receive were a nickle every few months. We’d celebrate every time, but we couldn’t have made it without the help of my siblings.
Does Ann Romney know what it’s like to not be paid the same as a man doing the same job? Does she know the struggles of women like my mom? Does she know the struggle of a single mom? Not in practical terms, though Ann Romney is absolutely capable of feeling a working mother’s pain and struggle, because she’s wealthy and knows the daunting task of motherhood, so she certainly can appreciate a mother with no help has it worse.
This is a no brainer, unless you want to play ideological one-upsmanship that pits stay at home moms vs. working moms vs. single moms vs. gay moms vs. BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH.
Just stick a laced sock in it, ladies.
If this is what women are going to do with this debate, get the hook and book the men.
Both David Axelrod and Jim Messina chimed in via Twitter, Messina saying Rosen should apologize. (She won’t.)
“I could not disagree with Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong and family should be off limits. She should apologize,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a tweet.
Top Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod also tweeted his disapproval: “Also Disappointed in Hilary Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive.”
This is how it begins.
The White House would be nuts to back Rosen’s play, but that doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate her lighting herself on fire to make the point, because it will resonate with many in Obama’s base.
Romney’s website said that women account for 92.3 percent of jobs lost under Obama. … There is a small amount of truth to the claim, but it ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. We rate it Mostly False. – Politifact
Mitt Romney’s problem with women makes Ann Romney’s role more important, the need to have her up front critical to his candidacy. The sacrifice to her health and longevity for over-extending will be an issue she and Mitt Romney struggle with throughout the 2012 campaign. It’s another job she’s taken on for which she’ll only get grief.
Motherhood is a full-time job for some women; I don’t know if Ann Romney is one of them.
Most stay at home moms have to cook, clean, shop, cart their kids around, create and take part in educational activities, balance the family checkbook, struggle with the budget, serve as family pharmacist, etc. etc.
Others have a lot of help- babysitters, nurses, au pairs, educators- live in or otherwise.
I don’t know which kind of “mom” Ann Romney was/is. But I suspect that when Fox, etc. compares her to the average harried, exhausted, financially concerned working mom, they are engaging in at least a little bit of fantasy.
I find it somewhat astonishing that Obama is seen as such a friend to women, because I don’t think he is. I am not at all sure he really is comfortable with women or around women. He SAYS he is, and certainly he’s promoted some women and put them in positions of authority and power. But the little stuff? Golfing with women, for example? Once. and face it, that was for show. Women themselves said working in the WH was close to a hostile work environment. And now yesterday’s report that women in the WH earn 18 percent less than men.
I don’t think that anyone here is claiming that Obama is that great. It’s just that the GOP is so awful when it comes to women.
Wow Taylor,
I know there was some reason why I relate to you on a lot of different levels – my background is a lot like yours, only my Dad died when I was 14. My Mom, who had been a stay at home Mom, went to work at a retail store for low wages, with small raises. She was however, the CFO and Chief Purchasing officer of the home and handled all the money. People actually thought we had some money because of her great money handling skills. We really didn’t, but, Mom was great with money, even though Daddy didn’t really make all that much. Plus, she was an excellent cook and seamstress.
Thanks for sharing that with us.
Hmmm…. I think Hilary Rosen point was…Ann Romney has never in her life had to worry about feeding all five of her sons…Ann Romney has never had to struggle financially…she has the luxury of being married most of her life to a very wealthy man. In today’s economy…most households require two incomes. Not all women can afford the nice luxury to sit at home…ride horses…live in four, five different beautiful homes… have servants do all the dirty work…shop where they please, fly first class, or have the best doctors in the world at their disposal etc….
Mrs. Ronmney appears to be nice a person…however, it maybe very hard for some working women voters to relate to Anne Romney back story. Only, a small percentage of women choose to not work outside the home. I don’t see the problem with her staying home and taking care of her family… its her personal choice. And I don’t blame Mrs. Romney for making that choice. If my husband was a wealthy man…I would not working either…lol
I think it will be hard for most middle class women to relate to Romney’s life even if they do stay at home.
Typical Obama/Axlerod. At the first whiff of trouble — Adopt the opposition’s frame and cave.
It gets worse. They sent in the big gun, First Lady Michelle Obama:
http://taylormarsh.com/blog/2012/04/michelle-obama-to-the-rescue/
so true! Obama was just on saying let’s make nice with the spouse of the opposition. Yeah like the rethugs do with Michelle. I get so sick of that mealy mouthed “let’s all just get along” will Obama never learn that they see it as weakness?
As far as Romney and the war on women, I predict someone will come out with a commercial showing Obama stating “You’re likable enough Hillary” and other misteps that occurred during the 2008 primaries.. Even showing the many mysogynistic comments by Obama supporters during the 2008 primary… and perhaps point out that at no time did the Obama campaign come out against such statements. Remember Chelsea is whoring herself for her mother by campaigning, or something to that effect.. Most statements were made on MSNBC… the Obama for POTUS network.
I realize what happened in 2008 does not relate to the partisan controversy that is happening now, but such an ad as I described above would certainly incite some women and perhaps make them uestion if Obama is really on their side, or is it just a political ploy.
Remember the subtle middle finger gesture to when he was referring to Hillary? The music he selected to enter to following a primary… some wrap about a bit**…
And then there was his comment just this week about how he had to wait to arrive to the function as the women needed to settle down: Words from Obama…
“I was going to head over here earlier, and they said, no, no, this place is full of women and they’re still settling down,” Mr. Obama told the room. “I said, what do you mean settling down? What are they doing over there? Just creating havoc.”
It wasn’t clear from his remarks who told the president to wait until the women had “settled down” before coming over to the conference, but the comments caught the attention of Republicans who posted the clip on YouTube under GOPICYMI. (Click here to see the comments)
The president went on to say that it was his pleasure to be surrounded by “so many talented, accomplished women.”

Anyway, my point is that Obama’s support of women now could be made out to be another political ploy. I have no doubt that he has the best interests of his wife and daughters at heart, but he often comes across as one of the good old boys himself.
I think Hilary Rosen just may be part of this ad if it ever comes to fruition…
As someone who has been a stay at home mom Anne Romney is right on one account and that’s raising kids is work. However, she has no idea about the struggles of the middle class to make ends meet on one salary as she obviously never had to deal with that. So while she’s partially right she’s also out of touch on what goes on in these households financially.
During the debate over what became Obamacare, I wrote an essay that basically said that until you’ve experienced financial insecurity for yourself, you have little or no idea what it’s like. If you have a job, and if you wonder how you’re going to get by if you ever lose it, then you have experienced a feeling Ann Romney will never know. If you haven’t been there, you just don’t know.
Perhaps I was reading too much into it, but I think that’s what Hilary Rosen was trying to say. As usual, though, the Obama Administration’s empathy for the poor and middle class can’t hold a candle to their love of the rich, so this turned out to be a bad day for Ms. Rosen.
I think this sums things up nicely…….
White House visitor logs indicate that “Hilary Rosen” visited the White House 35 times.
Gen. David Petraeus, head of our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the current CIA director, nine times.
“Hilary Rosen” visited the White House 35 times.
That is about once a month…
I still want to know what are Rosen’s ties to Sandra Fluck?
So what if she is her mother? It does not change a thing.
