TALK RADIO BOMB: 98 Advertisers Tell Premiere Networks to Avoid Shock Jocks

Rush Limbaugh’s “slut” and “prostitute” smears have officially become The Talk Radio Tipping Point. He and his right-wing talker spawn have finally been hoisted on their own poison petard.

But this latest controversy comes at a particularly difficult time for right-wing talk radio. They are playing to a (sometimes literally) dying demographic. Rush & Co. rate best among old, white males. They have been steadily losing women and young listeners, who are alienated by the angry, negative, obsessive approach to political conservations. Add to that the fact that women ages 24—55 are the prize advertising demographic, and you have a perfect storm emerging after Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke comments. – Rush Limbaugh Scandal Proves Contagious for Talk-Radio Advertisers

From Radio-Info, first reported on The Daily Beast by John Avlon:

From today’s TRI Newsletter: Premiere Networks is circulating a list of 98 advertisers who want to avoid “environments likely to stir negative sentiments.” The list includes carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm) and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway). As you’ll see in the note below, those “environments” go beyond the Rush Limbaugh show —

“To all Traffic Managers: The information below applies to your Premiere Radio Networks commercial inventory. More than 350 different advertisers sponsor the programs and services provided to your station on a barter basis. Like advertisers that purchase commercials on your radio station from your sales staff, our sponsors communicate specific rotations, daypart preferences and advertising environments they prefer… They’ve specifically asked that you schedule their commercials in dayparts or programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity). Those are defined as environments likely to stir negative sentiment from a very small percentage of the listening public.”

I’ve been waiting for 15 years for this talk radio moment. I’ve studied the medium from every angle and know it well. From my book, which I’ve not excerpted before, from the chapter “It’s All The Woman’s Fault”:

Talk radio king Rush Limbaugh and his fraternity of hacks like Hannity, as well as Sean’s mini-me, Mark Levin, spew misogynistic drivel all day long as part of the freedom-is-only-for-men crowd, while personally demeaning or lying about any liberal woman who stands up to them. Spewing invective like “feminazis” or using “Hillary Rotten Clinton, her thighness,” a sexist slur Mark Levin directed at Secretary of State Clinton, is what masquerades as “entertainment” on right-wing talk radio. Don Imus, the “nappy-headed ho” gasbag, has referred to Hillary as “Satan.” … ..

[...] … .. Besides, in the new-media age, right-wing talk radio is finally seen for what it is: the last sexist outpost of an outdated medium run by men, where women are merely tolerated as totems: a dying, misogynistic format with a mid-twentieth-century mindset. They’ve got their choir, but the majority of Americans just don’t take their sexist, hate-screen rants seriously anymore; certainly new generations will not. … ..

This is one of those moments in time that has the potential to change everything.

Without hate speech, right-wing talk radio could soon be extinct.

Boo hoo for all the hate mongers on radio, it couldn’t happen to a better bunch of clowns. Now maybe advertises will extend this to Faux news and all the hate mongers on TV. One can only hope.

EXACTly!!!! This is the final trumpet call for the fever addled, white, UBERChristian, racist, misogynistic, homophobic.xenophobic crowd. They have LOST the culture war. Now we need to get the bloated, sweaty one OFF of Armed Forces radio where his misogynistic and racist filth has demeaned and denigrated brave Americans who UNLIKE HIS COWARDLY ASS are willing to put their lives on the line for this country.

May this moment reach deeply into the GOP fiasco of a presidential campaign. And I will be just as happy if it gets the attention of some Dems, too — you, too, can be hurt by the consistent shifting to the Right …

      Indeed, indeed!!

Republicans in the hobbled establishment finally have a moment to shift things their way. Better act quickly.

Wingnut hosts like Rush will not take this lightly & will fight back.

“…Those are defined as environments likely to stir negative sentiment from a very small percentage of the listening public.”

Oh yeah, right, if you consider 51% of the population a very small percentage. They finally really made women mad!

You could look at that statement another way, though, which is that there’s probably a portion of the listening public that’s far smaller than it ought to be, and that’s because of the lousy entertainment options radio typically provides. The right wing loudmouths are one of the worst options available, but they’re not the worst.

I’ve been laboring under the impression that profit was beside the point for radio, at least when it’s owned by rich right wingers. The point seems to be to make sure that the little people get their little heads stuffed with the right kind of information (the sort that smarter people would call “misinformation”, methinks), and if that happened it was paying for itself.

Are radio networks really profit centers these days?

Considering that 99 percent of talk radio is sports and right-wing hackery, can I assume that the demise of right-wing talk will lead to wall-to-wall coverage of Canadian Football and Soccer?

I mean, what WILL they fill the time with?

Well NPR and Public radio, even the emasculated version that never fully recovered from the Bush years still KICKS EVERY WING NUTS ASS when it comes to listeners. maybe they should try intelligent, adult oriented programing and content?

Well I’ll be~ If I did not have my once a year hangover from our annual Bunko party here on the lake, I would say let’s raise a glass for a moment in time we should all celebrate!

A very dear man friend send me this link. IMHO, it is a great non-drinking celebration:

I just want to add a link to a blog that I mostly agree with. I will say in advance, I don’t know which political side she falls on. One comment accused her of wanting Sarah Palin to be elected. Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a squat. I agree with 90% of what she wrote:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amy-siskind/the-spring-of-sexism_b_1336224.html

Here is one excerpt that I take issue with:

“It’s time we the people finally hold our media accountable for the war of words. Men like Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher should be taken off the air. Argue free speech, fine. Let them foam at the mouth with misogynistic drivel in their lives as private citizens. But not on the airwaves!”

While I agree with the sentiment that this type of drivel should not be tolerated from either side, no matter the victim (public versus private citizen…if there is any such thing as private anymore), the forum (“free” versus pay to listen), or the extent–3-day, 90 minutes per day diatribe, versus a pattern of frequently and loosely dropping the C*$@ word or using Bimbo, and other slurs…saying they should be taken off the air is censorship.

That said, I strongly hope that both men fail epically, but due to public outcry to the point that the networks either cancel, or, companies pull advertizing just as is happening with Rush.

I doubt when they put free speech as part of the constitution that the founders of this country intended to include hate speech. That said, proving that something is hate speech versus a bad joke is a difficult task, especially when you have the liberal nitwit talk show hosts whining about “false equivalency” in bringing up Bill Maher. I don’t find a misogynist slur any more acceptable when it is done as a quip with smile towards a conservative woman who is a public figure on a viewer paid program, than a 3-day tirade on a “free” network against a relatively unknown woman who was called upon to make a statement to Congress.

All of it sucks. It is all bad, and anyone who is a friend to women needs to press the buzzer no matter when, where, what, who or how.

If we accept the false equivalency argument in support of Maher then what does this enable down the road? I mean, just suppose that Rush recognizes that if he can get on cable, he is immune to sponsor pressure, as Bill so gleefully threw in everybody’s face last week?

Do liberals really support that Rush going onto cable would make it all OK just so that Bill can continue to call Sarah Palin and other conservative female candidates the C Word?

If you think so, then just imagine that in 2020 both the Democratic and Republican candidates are women. In this corner, we have Bill Maher on HBO. In the other corner, we have Rush, now on Showtime.

BILL: Republican Woman Candidate XXX is a C_@T!!
    RUSH: IS NOT!!!
    Bill: Is Too!!
RUSH: Well, Democrat Woman Candidate YYY is a S*UT!!!
    Bill: IS NOT!!!
    RUSH: Is Too!!
Bill: Well, your candidate is a bigger Bimbo than my candidate!!!
    RUSH: IS NOT!!!
    Bill: Is Too!!

    I mean folks, REALLY????
