Democrats scored an upset in one of New York’s most conservative Congressional districts on Tuesday, dealing a blow to the national Republican Party in a race that largely turned on the party’s plan to overhaul Medicare. – Democrat Wins G.O.P. Seat; Rebuke Seen to Medicare Plan
Tonight we have a election that will send ripples across America and possibly transform the conversation in the Congress on the issue on screwing Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. We have a special election in upstate New York Congressional District 26. This district is red, the only one in NY carried by McCain in 2008, carried by GOP governor candidate Palidino against Cuomo in 2010, and lost by Senator Clinton in 2006.
GOP candidate Jane Corwin seemed to have this race in the bag early on until the House GOP had the idea to have a vote on killing Medicare. Corwin foolishly endorsed the measure in a district with thousands of elderly voters. Since then her poll numbers have dipped while her Democratic challenger, Kathy Hochul, has ripped apart Corwin.
Hochul has been effectively campaigning against cutting key social programs. She has run on keeping Medicare unchanged, leaving Social Security alive and well and has pushed raising taxes on the rich and ending oil subsidies. Should she win in a 65 percent GOP district with such a message I think this election could be seen as the turning point for the GOP’s austerity push and it might scare dems like McCaskill from calling for horrifying cuts.
Hochul’s potent ads:
9PM: POLLS HAVE CLOSED. AWAITING RETURNS…
