AP has now released guidelines for all reporters to avoid using the term “ground zero mosque.” It’s officially the equivalent of political napalm:

1. We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque” or “mosque at ground zero” on all platforms. (We’ve very rarely used this wording, except in slugs, though we sometimes see other news sources using the term.) The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area. We should continue to say it’s “near” ground zero, or two blocks away.

Oh, and if you hadn’t heard, the problem with the latest polling on Obama’s faith is that if he’d only go to church more often, wear his faith on his sleeve, it would all be okay. It’s enough to make you crazy. It’s Barack Obama’s fault people that only 34% of Americans think he’s a Christian? That’s down from 48% in 2009, with the suggestion more church! This coming from the media, Republican strategists, but also average voters who actually believe Obama being seen as Muslim is because people aren’t seeing him at church.

Let’s be frank, shall we? This goes back to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. That’s where the foundation was laid, with some people not forgetting, even after Barack Obama distanced himself completely from his crazy preacher’s anti-American rants. So what you’ve got now after 20 months of discontent is a set up for a sticky, negatively emotional attachment on anything that comes along to solidify people’s previous perceptions. Facts don’t matter.

George W. Bush wore his faith on his sleeve, but didn’t openly practice while president; Ronald Reagan rarely attended church. So, thinking that all it would take is for Obama to be seen going to church more often is stunningly naive.

The Cordoba House has simply escalated and conflated an issue that brings out some people’s insufferable paranoia of anything other in this country, of something different, beyond what they’re used to seeing. It’s the same circular conversation when you try to say this country isn’t a “Christian nation.” People’s heads explode.

Add 9/11, not to mention contentious midterms, and the detonation is nuclear yield, as we’ve seen.

The Cordoba House is our usual God, guns, abortion and gays culture war on steroids.

That Sen. Harry Reid and Howard Dean broke with Pres. Obama on the Cordoba House, ground zero mosque, whatever you want to call it, just made matters worse for everyone. The Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight were marksmen compared to Democrats.
