First Hillary, Now Sarah

I compiled a post for Huffington Post, using some material from posts already seen here, that I thought I’d share today. It’s especially interesting given what Clinton said on “This Week.”

I’ll say this up front once again, even given Palin’s wide political differences, on which Clinton and I agree. I have no intention of demonizing Sarah Palin. I don’t like her politics, but millions of people are behind her and I cannot afford to be blinded by ideology in my political analysis, as it would render me incapable of seeing what’s happening in places where I’ve shut myself off and out.

I agree with you, Taylor. And I think you are very astute about Sarah Palin. Sometimes people see what they want to see. I could never vote for Sarah Palin because we are on opposite ends of the spectrum politically, but I see some of the same media bias on Sarah as I did on Hillary. She doesn’t seem to be an intellectually curious person (I’m being polite) but I don’t think she is anyone’s fool, either. And I don’t see George Bush as being any smarter than Palin. I really don’t know enough about her and I filter out a lot of the MSM garbage but Palin, for all her misstarts, does have a power base, a certain charisma, and persistence. I guess I would question if she has the capacity to learn from her mistakes.

I must confess Ms. Marsh( I LOOOOVEZ ya, ya knowz I duz!)after what was done by DEMS and Candidate Obama and his campaign to HRC during the primary, that was apparently ACCEPTABLE to the majority of the Dem electorate I am finding it exceedingly difficult to work up any tears for Ms. Palin and her treatment.
Added to the fact of her very REAL limitaions and love of wingnuts and wingnut conspiracies…the coin fiasco… all I can say is have at her. Since we are all in the era of win at any cost have at her.

  4. Considering that the RNC has sold insurance to their senators and representatives which covers abortion for the last 18 years, the party leaders have NO CREDIBILITY when they oppose abortion.

This will affect the credibility of people like Sarah Paln with independent people and even the fundies she preaches to. Will they now believe her when the RNC supported abortion for the last 18 years?

They oppose abortion for non Republican party members who have low incomes. This will appear a BIG issue in the 2010 election.

The Republican party has a big stake in America’s future. Let us remove that stake and see that America helps the less fortunate in our country.

The only problem with Palin is we now live in a world where a VERY small percentage actually pays attention to ‘facts’. The intelligent people who come to these posts are generally within that 5% (1%?? *L*) or so. No – today it is ‘impressions’ that lead the way (see Kerry and “flipflop”). Sarah Palin could actually do everything from calling her child a ’stupid retard’ to cheating on her taxes and it wouldn’t matter diddly squat to the majority of America. That’s precisely how we got such a clown in the previous president. It is also why the ratings for Beck and O’Reilly are so high. They truly feed on the ignorant masses.
It’s really sad y’know. Today – JR from Dallas could get elected to office.

  6. pmichael says:

Um. That would be J.R. the asshole, from the TV show ‘Dallas’ (whom everyone hated yet loved to watch).
Sorry – sometimes I forget how ancient I’m getting. ;-)

Hey Taylor! Still alive, still reading your site in my new post-blogger rock star existence.

I’ve said this before, but the Palin phenomenon reminds me of the film “Being There” more than anything. I don’t want to see harm done to Palin…she’s done that to herself by quitting as governor of America’s least-populated state after an unsuccessful 2 1/2 run. That’s the one big reason I think she won’t be a viable presidential candidate. Bush was also dumb, maybe dumber, but at least he had 6 years as a bipartisanly popular governor of TEXAS to barely squeak by Gore.

When I see Palin on TV, talking about anything at all, my feeling isn’t “She is evil and must be stopped!” which was the old Republican anti-Hillary reaction, it’s more like…eyes rolling, jaw-dropped and “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

She still gets so much attention because, to the yokels…er, sorry…her fans, she’s the messiah awaiting a glorious return. And everyone else can’t turn away from the fascinating train wreck. For entertainment value alone, I hope she runs in both 2012 and 2016, losing to Romney the first time and to Hillary the second time. ;)

    Taylor~

I’m glad you don’t want to demonize Palin. It gets tiresome.Like everyone on this site I don’t agree with her politics and I find her to eager to exploit some ugly things in our culture. But we all need to watch her closely and try to understand her appeal. The people who love her are a group who feels left out of the mainstream and disrespected. She is spunky and fights back she has strong populist appeal. With unemployment high populism is going to be a strong element in our next elections. I wish it would come from the left, I would jump right on that bandwagon but so far the populist energy is coming from the right.

  10. secularhumanizinevoluter says:

“But we all need to watch her closely and try to understand her appeal.”
TRY to understand her appeal? Easy, she appeals to the racist, homophobic, xenophobic, superstition/religous bigot, moron vote. In other words…the folks left who admit to being repugnantklaners.
” The people who love her are a group who feels left out of the mainstream and disrespected.”
Because the ARE racist, homophobic, xenophobic, superstition/religious morons. They ARE out of the mainstream and they SHOULD be disrespected by any sane, decent person who actually believes the Constitution means what it says for everybody.
FU*K EM, the reason they feel looked down upon is because they CHOSE to back regressive, repressive, hypocritical MORONS for public office.

  11. Palin does not appear a populist in the economic justice and spread it to everyone sense.

Palin appears a demagogue who looks like a female version of Elmer Gantry who does appeal to the financially strapped lower and middle class and shifts the real blame from the corporations onto everyone else who doesn’t appear White and wealthy and Republican.

That’s a good point. The corporations are a huge factor in all of this, also interfering in Democratic Party policies as well now. That’s the sad part.

Hichens can really grate sometimes but this is a good one.

Thanks for that link Lake LAdy. That is a good one.

  15. Well lynnette click on my username and learn how you can help fight excessive corporate power.

  16. pmichael says:

That was a pretty good article, Lake Lady (though it rambled a bit). Best line was the last:

“Sarah Palin appears to have no testable core conviction except the belief that the end of days and the Second Coming will occur in her lifetime. This completes the already strong case for allowing her to pass the rest of her natural life span as a private citizen.”

  17. pmichael says:

Which reminds me. I’ve watched Black people slowly getting equality. More slowly, I’ve watched women climbing toward equality. Just recently, Gays came out in the open and may soon gain their rights.

    Is there anything left?
    Yes.
There is no way today an atheist (openly denying God and church) could get elected to higher office. If this has happened I sure haven’t heard about it.
But we continue to grow up.

  18. djjl says:

I like the last line the best too.

  20. Taylor Marsh says:

    Heya Scott, good to hear.

It’s *always* interesting when I put up something about Palin.

  21. pmichael says:

Taylor, that’s because we feminists would love to find something good about her and see something positive from her. She, Bachman, Ann Coulter – these women with Stockholm Syndrome really drive us out of our minds.

  22. secularhumanizinevoluter says:

“She, Bachman, Ann Coulter – these women with Stockholm Syndrome”?!
More like employed women that get a big paycheck from being politicol prostitutes.

  23. secularhumanizinevoluter says:

    Make that selfemployed.

  24. pmichael says:

    Funny, Sec. That’s one of my best lines;

“The only people who are ’self-employed’ –
    — are counterfeiters.”

All the rest of us have bosses. *L*

  25. Actually middle class and poor Republicans suffer from Stockholm syndrome held hostage by companies that employ them and the Republiklan party.

  26. pmichael says:

democratz, as someone with more time for these things than I, if you would go to the thread regarding the ‘kangaroo’ terrorist trials – I’d certainly appreciate your take on my question.
