In Our Wake

Can Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki secure the country? That seems to be the question the bombers wanted to float before the 2010 elections.
No hand wringing here.
We should never have preemptively invaded Iraq, with horrendous bombings happening when we were cordoning off whole sections of the country, so no one should be surprised things are still exploding. There’s nothing left we can do but cover the carnage. Juan Cole adds more.
Though with Newt Gingrich openly mulling a run for the presidency there can be little doubt that dig down and dig deep will make a come back. But his reemergence does make one thing clear. It’s okay for Republicans to cheat on their wife even as she fights against cancer, while rooting for the impeachment of a Democratic president, with rules and “traditional values” a convenient shield for hypocrites.
