UPDATE: If you haven’t read George Packer’s piece on Richard Holbrooke in the New Yorker, it’s now online. For Af-Pakistan watchers it’s a must read.

Not everyone has the day off. Wall Street is open; D.C. and Congress are off, so it will be a bit quieter, minus foreign news, which is a continuous flow. Anything on your mind today?
As you’ll see in the video, Hillary Clinton says “NO,” then, “I’m looking forward to retirement at some point.”
Dozens Killed in Pakistan in Deadly Blast
North Korea Fires Two Short-Rage Missiles
Civilian Goals Largely Unmet in Afghanistan
Palestinian Unity Hopes Dim (as Goldstone Report Sparks Divisions)
If you’ve got something on your mind let ‘er rip.

Good Morning.
I’ve had this old bit of a musical running through my mind the last couple of weeks. It reminds me of the few who are really working for us in Congress. These men worked and gave their all when it was life or death for them – today they work and it is life and death for the people they act on behalf of.

Interesting:
“Fox Business Network is eying CNN host Lou Dobbs, the New York Times’ Brian Stelter reports.
Stelter merely mentions the news midway through his article on the ongoing battle between the White House and Fox News”:

I hope that Hillary changes her mind regarding a future run for President.
The fact that she would be almost 70 in 2016 is probably the biggest obstacle. And not even Hillary can stop time!
In retrospect, she should have run in 2004 – she would have easily defeated the weak field of democrats, become the first female presidential nominee and possibly defeated Bush.
Really a shame that such a brilliant woman may never serve as our President.
I’m happy to have her where she is. I’m not so certain she isn’t in a position to do a lot more than one might expect. It would make a lot of sense for her NOT to run. She has worked hard her entire life – it would be nice to see her simply enjoy her life with her family, friends, and loved ones.
Good Morning all.
Well i wont hide my adoration of Hillary. I think she would have been Great. But we, as Americans, we get the President we deserve. Hmmm…just something to ponder. We deserved Geroge W Bush after years of absurd fasicinations with the previous admin. We weren’t satisfied with peace and prosperity now we got to experience the other end of that spectrum. Wel we will just have to SETTLE for Barack Obama, who is doing his best which is far bellow our expectations.
He’s doing about what I had thought he’d do. But I do believe is into the work now. He didn’t have enough real legislative experience to know how difficult it would be.
I’m pleased to see the agressive push back from the WH onmedia idiocy. Hillary would have been great but it became clear to me that this country was not ready to elect a woman – or perhaps better put would be the MSM media is not ready.

Here’s another good one – 4 month old breast fed infant turned down for health insurance because of the pre-existing condition of obesity.

I don’t know whether to laught or cry on this one. Did they ever think this kid might be genetically predisposed to being a big child? and I don’t mean obese. My oldest son weighed 37 pounds at 1 year old and was 36 inches tall. He grew like a weed and the year between his 12th and 13th birthday grew a foot. He ended up almost but not quite 6′6″ tall and weighed in at 275 lbs. as a super heavyweight for the Golden Gloves when he was 19. He was lean and muscular. Now that he’s in his 40s he’s around 215 thanks to competing in triathelons. He’s still lean and muscular, just a big guy.
As much as I wanted Hillary to be president, I do not want to commit her to running for president again, especially if she is almost 70. I know what 70+ years is like, and while the spirit is very often willing the creaking bones and other problems start to creep in to the body. Can’t be helped; it’s called the aging process. As active as I am, I’m only too happy to stretch out in the evening and think nothing but pleasant thoughts. I can’t imagine someone who has worked as hard as Hillary has during her lifetime taking it easy as president regardless of her age and I’d be worried about her health. I say enjoy the golden years; do what you want and where you want. And there are many things she could do.

It’s just making me angrier. I gained a total of 10 lbs with my 2nd daughter; they had me drinking a malt drink at lunch the last month to gain some weight. Erin weighed 10lb 2 oz at birth, 24lbs at 6 mo and 34 lbs at one year. She’s perfectly health and normal in every way and drop dead beautiful – a size 12.
taylor- i think the story is ahip. after 9 months of writing a ins. friendly bill ahip decides to run ads and try to destroy bauc bill. how funny. if progs arent emboldened now after beign told to give in all along the way well then i dont know

Babies have a tendency to grow at their own rates if given the proper diets. Some will grow at a faster rate than others; some slower. Somewhere along the way, unless they start eating junk foods, their weight starts to stablize. I often wonder how I could have stopped my son from growing. He is what he is. Like your daughter, he is drop dead goregous. And this is just something I realized only in the last few years. I always thought he was cute but as a man, WOW!
BTW djjl – I’ve read some terrific books since January, about 50. I’ve been doing research for my pastor and the book list is awesome. Some of the books I can’t put down (I may have given you the titles of a few)so if you want some good books to read let me know.
I’d love to have some books to read. I’m trying to back off straight politics a little – my family can’t believe it. But, it’s about to wear me out physically and emotionally.
Hello All!
I never got the whole Columbus Day thing…nonetheless I’m enjoying the day off.
As for Hillary, I’m glad with the work shes doing right now. What the future holds, who really knows?
btw. The inner cook in me is excited for Martha Stewart’s new book tomorrow, which only means I’ll have to test recipes.
daubry
Aren’t you from the North East? We don’t do Columbus Day in the south – but my experience was that Columbus Day is a really big deal in the north.
What’s the new cookbook? I love Martha Stewart!
Yeah, I’m in New York City. So there’s a parade and such, I still don;t get the appeal. lol

I get the cookbook addiction from my mom (the difference is I use mine)
I love to cook. I’m getting ready to make a couple of loaves of bread and a pot of oxtail soup.

taylor- i think the story is ahip.
Look forward to your diary on the subject.
DAUBRY – You might want to *really* consider an ongoing cooking diary every once in a while! Late night or weekends, maybe? It’s never too early to prepare for holiday treats!!!
how funny!
My mom just picked up oxtails for the first time!
She needs a good recipe!
I’ve got to go for a bit – but I’ll post the recipe when I get back.
That sounds like a good idea, I think everyone here would enjoy something like that.
And yes, it’s never too early. I have some things in mind to bring over to my sister’s house this coming Thanksgiving!
djjl – here’s 4 that I really think are great!
The Millennium Matrix by M. Rex Miller (once you get into it, no turning back)
Threshold of the Future by Michael Riddell (awesome)
turning to One Another by Margaret J. Wheatley (loved this one)
The Great Emergence by Phyllis Tickle (will tickle your intellect)
It’s rather refreshing to get away from politics and read something that’s a bit more “heaven bound.”
I have more; let me know when you’re ready.

I love oxtails and usually make soup out of them but also make braised oxtails. Haven’t done the braised in quite a few years but now that fall is upon us, might consider doing them braised. They used to be cheap but now they’re almost expensive as sirloin.
This is just too good:
Weiner: AHIP Report Makes Strongest Case In Weeks For Public Option
: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/12/weiner-ahip-report-makes_n_317561.html
I especially enjoyed this section:
While dismissing the report’s findings as typical of an industry that seeks to protect its profits, the New York Democrat also made a fairly salient point. The analysis basically assumes that insurers will raise their rates because the finance committee won’t make the pool of consumers more desirable for them. All of which lays out the logical case for providing consumers with a cheap and available alternative, set up and administered by the federal government.
“I think in a strange way and obviously they didn’t mean this, the health insurance lobby fired the most important salvo in weeks for the option,” said Weiner. “Because they have said clear as day… they’ll raise rates 111%.”
Don’t you just love it? I think this could stick.
gotta go again – bbl

OMG, JA! I grew up eating Ox-tails. They’re like mother’s milk to me.
Mother’s. Friggen. Milk.
My grandmother, who was Slovak and who both remembered and reminded us what everything cost during the depression, used to tell us about how Ox-tails used to be only $.10/pound.
Not any more!
The first time my now-partner met my extended family was 18 years ago over a huge pot of Ox-tail soup. He thought we all looked like a bunch of cave-men hunched over steaming bowls of soup and sucking on things that looked like vertebrae’s. He was not amused. Fortunately, my sister-in-law took him aside and advised him’ “Honey, if you want to get in good with this gang, you need to make peace with the Ox-tails!”
He did. Now, he LOVES ‘em!
While we grew up only eating them in soup, I now prefer them braised. I salt and pepper them, and roast them at 450 for an hour in the oven. I pour off the fat, saute my aromatics, and deglaze the roasting pan with Pinot Noir. Then I put it all in my Le Creuset dutch oven and braise it at 225 degrees for like 5 hours.
It rocks!

LOL. I just sent my hubby to the store for ox-tails. They are so succulent and tasty. I think I’m going to try your recipe. I have a bottle of Pinot Noir so they’ll be tomorrow’s dinner. Just perfect for fall. I can taste them already.

You will now see their true colors come out. If they try to use this kind of threat against the American public they may end up putting their a@@es in the meat grinder.
here in tx columbus day is very controversial. i do too. yes columbus discovered america-except he didnt. a whole civilization discovered this place, had empires and rich lives for thousands of yrs. check out 500 Nations the docu on all this. or burns’ The West. trruth hurts. I think columbus day should be abolished. It marks for many the end of their cultures. Columbus’ folks were brutal . brutal to natives. I do not think in a few decades columbus day will be a holiday and it shouldnt.
I don’t have a clue as to whether or not Columbus day will be celebrated in the decades to come. But, I do think your analysis of the holiday is without reasonable perspective.
UPDATE: Rocky Mountain Health Plans has now said it will cover Alex Lange, a baby they previously refused to give health insurance because of his weight.
“A recent situation in which we denied coverage to a heavy, yet healthy, infant brought to our
attention a flaw in our underwriting system for approving infants,” says Steve ErkenBrack, president and CEO, Rocky Mountain Health Plans. “Because we are a small company dedicated to the people of Colorado, we are pleased to be in a position to act quickly. We have changed our policy, corrected our underwriting guidelines and are working to notify the parents of the infant who we earlier denied.”

How magnanimous of them. What, they found out that babies have a tendency to grow at their own rate or that babies were too young for Slim-Fast? ugh………….
JA
What they found out is somebody got the story in the press – Big Time.
I was being snarky. I figured someone had hit the press.
OH MY. Watching Ed – the baby’s daddy is a news anchor!!!!!
columbus day?
http://uctp.blogspot.com/
Yes, Columbus Day. As one who grew up in Houston, there was never a real holiday for Columbus – it was a commemoration just as it’s always been in much if not most of the South.
From your blogspot post:
“Every hero is somebody else’s villain,” said Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, a scholar and author of several books related to Columbus, including “1492: The Year the World Began.”
“Heroism and villainy are just two sides of the same coin.”
I just think your view lacks appropriate perspective.

I’m with you. My husband also has said she should have run in 2004, but who knew? I know Hillary deserves a great retirement in life but I am one who thinks she should run. Actually we could have had both Hillary and Barack, in that order, but now we may only have one of them – and that is an incomplete picture as far as I am concerned.
