Friday Night Free For All

Busy day for me… One thing I’ve been working on is understanding the road forward in Afghanistan so I can offer some concrete political analysis, which comes through digesting the many experts I’ve been listening to over the months. More on that sometime over the weekend, once I gather a cohesive narrative.
Now, of course, I’m just glad it’s Friday night… Though my work never stops, it’s a good time to just PAUSE.
I’m getting ready for cocktails. The music is compliments of my friend WB, who keeps me in great music, including YouTube suggestions for Friday night cocktails. Salut!
OPEN THREAD.

Taylor,
I enjoy your music selections. And I do look forward to Friday night chill’n. I feel more hopeful this week.
I’m cooking barbecue pork for sandwiches as may daughter and husband begin moving into their first home. Anybody have a beer and a non-alcoholic beverage to recommend?
Sunday’s my birthday – 46 – ugh! My husband and I are walking the Portland marathon that day. I ran it in 1999, so ten years later we decided to walk. Would love to run it again, but after 4 knee surgeries it is not wise… although I still toy with the idea some days. Happy Friday!
Hey djjl. Thanks. Jazz is just my thang.
I’m not a beer expert by ANY stretch of the imagination. But I really enjoyed Ultra (low carb, light). My husband won’t drink it. That’s my beer of choice, hey, but I’m a wine drinker. Full bodied fave is Sam Adams.
Happy early Birthday! “Ugh”? Enjoy it!
Whitepaw
Happy Birthday!!!
If you are unhappy about this birthday you will be unhappy about every birthday for the rest of your life. Don’t do that. You don’t deserve that.
Taylor,
I like Sam Adams. There are also a few really good micro breweries here. You may recall, we had visitors from Austria the last 2 weeks – they were very positively impressed with the local beers. They said many of their breweries have gone out of business.

Happy Birthday, Whitepaw. You’re a kid compared to me! Enjoy it. I like Yuengling beer – it’s brewed in Pennsylvania (I guess the oldest brewery in the U.S.) and is not too light and not too bitter. I like a middle of the road type beer and that’s Yuengling.
Taylor,
I like jazz, nut I like some really weird stuff too:

My husband LOVES Yuengling beer! He’s from Pa.
I lived with my grandfather and aunt for a number of years. My dad gave me some old 33 1/3 albums – really cool.

My husband’s sister lives outside of Philly and she and her husband introduced Yuengling to us. They used to bring us some when they visited and it has become popular in my area of New York State so we can now buy it here. By the way, I meant to tell you last year about this time my Mom and I went on a 2 week road trip. We visited Little Rock, Central High, and the Clinton Library. I thought Little Rock was very pretty and Central High was absolutely gorgeous – amazing architecture. Of course, we loved the Clinton Library.
Wonderful lynette.
If you ever come back again and have time to share, give me a call. We moved here with no expectation of staying and simply fell in love.
My husband is from a small town named Portage, near Johnstown, Pa. He has a lot of family in the Philly area and a brother near Pittsburgh. There’s another brother near DC and sister next door to Sioux City Iowa.
I don’t know if you saw it or not, our youngest daughter recently had her wedding reception at the Clinton Library Great Hall. It was beautiful. We are happy to show this wonderful little city.
Thanks for the BD wishes everyone.. and sorry about the ugh comment. It’s just that this year I’ve really started to notice physical signs of aging… doesn’t that happen to everyone at some point… and then you accept it and move on? I promise to enjoy my birthday and all others that follow.. !
Beer — we have tons of microbreweries here in Portland. Widmer you may have heard of… but there are many many (need I say again…MANY)more. I’m not a beer drinker either. Like Taylor, I prefer wine. My girlfriend heads the Walla Walla Wine Alliance (eastern Washington…Pacific NW.. not DC)… and they have fabulous wines. I encourage fellow wine lovers to try them. Link below. On a sad note, I heard today that many vineyards/wineries are in trouble. They expect 200 local wineries to go out of business soon.

If I am ever there to visit again, I’ll take you up on your offer to call. I didn’t know that about your daughter’s wedding. How cool. My Mom and I also visited Hot Springs when we were in Arkansas – beautiful area. I thought the gangster stories were pretty interesting. Looks like that was some exciting town at one time.

Yes.
Thank you lynnette! I’m happily smiling right now….

Good! Have fun and celebrate.
Thank You, Mr. President
Count me as one conservative who is disappointed that President Obama’s hometown will not be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.
Chicago is a beautiful city that would have made a perfect backdrop for the Olympics. The President was right to fly to Copenhagen to try to land the games, not for the sake of his city, but for the good of his country. The fact President Obama failed makes me respect him more for taking the chance, and the fact many right-wing figures opposed the President’s mission shows just how narrow-minded partisanship makes us all.
For the better part of 20 years, a bitterness has infected our politics that has weakened our country.
We Republicans spent eight years trying to delegitimize Bill Clinton.
Democrats spent the next eight years doing the same to George W. Bush.
Now that a Democrat is in the Oval Office again, it is the GOP who is trying to .

Af-Pak team huddles with Clinton
By Laura Rozen:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led a “very intensive,” three and a half hour Af-Pak discussion in the secure Principals Conference Room in the Ops Center today.
Among those who participated: Special Represetative Richard Holbrooke, his deputy Paul Jones, senior advisor Vali Nasr, special defense advisor Vikram Singh, deputy secretaries of state Jim Steinberg and Jack Lew, Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Bob Blake, Clinton chief of staff Jake Sullivan and deputy policy planning chief Derek Chollet in Washington, plus US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry and Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson and senior embassy leadership via secure video.
Clinton was presented briefings on a range of issues from COIN to civilian surge to Afghan election and broader diplomatic strategy, and there was lots of give and take and many questions including from the Secretary in what an advisor called a “very intensive” discussion. The White House has scheduled three more Af-Pak inter-agency meetings at the White House this week that Clinton, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other principals and key advisors are due to attend.
food for thought-ioc cmte member asks why obama hasnt undone bush visa laws. has obama’s reluctance to undo bush policy cost support witht he ioc? regardless the visa thing must change so we dont lose great minds to other nations

Went out to dinner last night(Indian…MMMMmmmmm) so I couldn’t post a recipe.
How about breakfast?!
Four or more(depending on how large the party was and how many slept over) extra large eggs.
One good sized Yukon Gold spud.
Medium Onion
Couple cloves Garlic
GOOD sized Jalepeno
Handful of Cilantro or Parsley fresh from the Herb garden
about 1/2 to 3/4 cup rough chopped Ham or Pork
Liquid smoke.
Cut the spud in half. Now cut halves into four pieces. Dice as thinnly as humanly possible without the spud going red(from the cut finger) Put spuds in a pot of salted cold water and put on HIGH heat.
Dice Onion and Garlic
Seed (or not, how brave are you?) the pepper and dice as small as possible.
Drizzle some EVOO(extra Virgin Olive Oil) into a HOT Skillet and add onions, garlic and pepper and cook till the onions are starting to brown. Shake and flip the mixture a couple of times.
By now the spuds should have come to a boil. Turn off the heat and let the bubbling stop.
Drain and let sit in the hot pan for a couple of 10 or so seconds to dry them. They are about 1/2 to 3/4 cooked now.
Add to mixture in skillet and flip to mix up and let cook some more.
Salt and pepper to taste the meat.
Add to mix and flip.
Crack eggs into a large bowl.
Add a good shot of fake butter spray(open the bottle and pour a dollup in) and a drop or two of liquid smoke.
With a fork whip till an even golden yellow and no whites are left unblended.
Give the mix a final flip(should have some nice browning on spuds and onions and meat by now) and pour the eggs in and tilt the pan till it evenly distributes over and into the mix.
After a about twenty or thirty seconds use a fork and start turning it over and keep doing until the eggs are as done as you like em.
Serves(depending on how hung over and hungry) two to four.
If more folks just add more eggs to the egg part.
Goes REAL good with fresh Buttermilk Biscuts!
GREAT cookd on a campfire too!!!
Oh yeah, at some point chop the cilantro reall well and add to the egg mix!
Wanted to let everyone know that Jane Austin says hello: “And please tell everyone I thank them for their expressions of condolences and sympathy.”
yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, secularh. What a great recipe. I’m going to give that one to my hubby for one of his campfire cookouts.
secularh..as usual making my mouth water.Wish I could eat eggs…allergic, damn!
Kudos, Taylor. “Autumn Leaves” is my favorite standard. I love this version. I also love Cannonball Adderley’s. My favorite probably is Eva Cassidy from Live at Blues Alley:
Tried to embed, but I suck at things like that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSXYu-3r1S8
Incidentally, the missus and I were at Blues Alley last night, catching Roy Hargrove and his badass Quintet. Great fun!

It’s a *great* one, for sure. Sumptuous Eva Cassidy version. Thanks for that.
I bet Roy Hargrove slammed it. He’s remarkable… and then some.
TM, thanks for the YouTube help
Yep, Roy was on FIRE. It’s always a treat to see him.
Happy Birthday Whitepaw!
Thank goodness for the weekend.
ps. did anyone see the Saturday Night Live opening skit? Not so kind to the Pres..
