Taylor thanks so much for writing this important piece. You are correct on all points. Who would have ever guessed that back when this became settled law we were experiencing the zenith of progressive thought in our country. I was under the delusion that we were at the beginning.

We all wondered for a long time what Obama’s true place was on the Democratic continuum. Judging by the sides he is taking, I would say you have found it, he is a Bluedog.

It’s truly amazing that Democrats are so reluctant to openly talk about rewriting the Hyde Amendment, while upholding THE LAW. Most try to out conservative the right-wing, because they don’t want to seem immoderate.

Coakley, running for Kennedy’s seat in MA, was one of the most candid people in recent memory to state what I’ve said above matter of factly. I thought Chris Matthews’ head was going to explode.

As for Obama being THE Blue Dog, the only caveat I’d offer to my own analysis is that Obama isn’t as ideologically driven as the Blue Dogs. He’ll deal across the board, including with the right. An important caveat. You judge whether that’s good or bad.

The Blue Dogs use their ideology when it suits them.Isn’t the deficit supposed to be their holy grail? Well it seems that the facts are on the side of a PO for savings. The Bauchus bill will drive up costs and and therefore the debt.Obama may be willing to deal across ideological lines but his goal appears to be to protect the profits of the existing structure.

Taylor, I feel exactly like you do on this issue. That’s why we need a good progressive woman president. The women’s issues are always brushed aside as just that and not the civil/human rights issues that they really are.

I remember my mom recalling a story, when Roe. v. Wade was happening; During service (in a catholic church) they were passing and telling people to sign a petition for the “lives of the unborn” and to outlaw abortions. My mom refused to sign it, and was politely asked to never come back.

Of course I asked her why she refused, she explained there used to be an abortion “clinic” (on Avenue A) in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a place of horrors, and everyone knew about it. She said, if her daughter ever needed or wanted an abortion she could never bring her to a place like that. And she couldn’t imagine any woman, sister, or daughter having to endure a place like that.

There is no doubt in my mind that a woman’s right to choose should be available in any healthcare reform/package. The fact that many male politicians from any side of the political spectrum can’t grasp that is infuriating and shows we haven’t done as much progress on the actual importance of a woman’s right to choose.

Why is it in a time when there is a commanding majority of Democrats in the House, Senate and one in the White House rather then a rythmic drum beat of consEEEERvative heads exploding I’m getting sharp pains in mine?
