The Washington Post did the same thing on Iraq, even though I happen to support the efforts in Afghanistan, however skeptical I am about escalation of troops. Still not convinced.
ps-Have no idea why your post didn’t show up. Everything’s working on our end.
Taylor I get your support;Pakistan,Iran, terrorist havens,Israel, women’s rights. I just don’t see how we can continue to support it. Unless the President wants to increase taxes and reinstitute the draft. Off the budget debt is still debt. How can we sustain it?
To a person everyone who comes back from being with the troops tells us how exceptional they are,the best and brightest. How can we continue to redeploy them over and over. I can’t imagine the damage we have already done to them, their families, their finances. How can we keep grinding them into dust?
Lake Lady, I agree with you about the troops. We cannot sustain what we are doing with the troops we have. One of my club brothers son is now on his 4th tour, three in Iraq and now in Afganistan. While he was home he said he couldn’t sleep, and all he could think of, was he going to buy it this time. If this country is serious about this war, then its time to re-instate the draft, and put the whole country on a war footing.
Thanks for posting this and for chiming in. Not near enough people speak up on foreign policy. I applaud those of you that do, including lurkers I hear from on the issue.
Keep making your case. …as I will make mine, though I am not a supporter of more troops right now, I also do not think we are close to withdrawing from Afghanistan.
I agree Taylor that we are not withdrawing anytime soon, and there in is the rub. How do we keep sustaining the level of this war without doing damage to our to few troops? At this rate with troops doing four, five and six tours, we are slowly killing them and their families. If we are going to continue this war, we need a draft, and we need to raise taxes on everybody to pay for it.
I don’t see the American people willing to go all the way in this, so what will happen, is we will continue to bleed the same troops over and over again.
I am chiming in, however probably not saying anything I haven’t said before.
We need to leave Afghanistan now. Eight years later and we still don’t have a strategy other than more troops or a long term commitment to building the country. Nation building – fine but why Afghanistan. I understand the issue for women and children, but as I have stated before there are countries all over the world where women and children are treated in the same vein. Are we going to commit to every country that needs this kind of assistance?
We do not have the money nor the troops to continue this folly. The troops deserve better than to be dragged from conflict to conflict year after year.
And this country deserves the money spent on this nonsense to be spent at home for a change. Health care anyone?
Our country as a whole is unaffected by the two wars on a daily basis, unless they have someone dear in the service. A draft and a tax would get their attention. This whole idea of America being an imperial power and at the same time not inconviencing the majority of the people is immoral. We have ourselves in a unsustainable situation, the super power who guards our allies, while they clean our clock economically.
A very few people are getting rich ie.military contracters but it is the future generations that will be stuck with the debt not to mention decimating our volunteer military. What about readiness? Who knows what North Korea might do at anytime or Russia.
And what the hell constitutes “success” in Afghanistant. As I understand current discussion it’s getting rid of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan yet allowing the Taliban to do what they want. What kind of strategy is that?
Hum…for some reason my post did not show up?
I was remarking how interesting it is that Bob Woodward always shows up at the right time to push for more war.

Therein lies the rub.

We need to rethink our place in the world.
