Nicholas Kristof’s piece today seems an appropriate to tag on to Taylor’s post and pmichael’s In The News comments.

You see, to me, it’s about those other’s who think they have the right to treat females as their property or as some lessor being that should not rule her own body.

Excellent, djjl. I read this and you’re so right.

It’s one of the great disappointments so far in Obama’s control over the State Dept. But also what I’ve seen from Hillary, including DipNote blog that ignored the rising up of women in Iran’s “green wave.”

The lack of courage on women’s issues globally in the current Administration, for which Obama, but also Clinton by going along, are complicit. Understanding that Clinton must follow Obama’s lead, she is not near as forceful or out front as I had hoped. The “star” State turn I thought she’d embrace nowhere in sight.

djjl – thanks for posting this. I read it first thing this morning and was going to post it but had to go to church. I have been following Kristof’s trip through Pakistan and he writes so movingly about the plight of the people, especially women.

And if anyone wants to donate to http://www.mercycorps.org I can’t think of a more deserving organization to donate to. Think what a few dollars will do to help this organization.

While women in this country face many hurdles in the fight to control their own bodies I can tell you from experience that women in some of the developing countries have an almost insurmountable fight.

That Assiya did not commit suicide as most women would have been expected to do is an enormous tribute to her strength and courage.
