This really is the ultimate in ignorance on the part of Matthews and the rest of the male blowhards regarding women’s issues. Seems that the good ol’ boys’ club still wants to make decisions for women when it comes to controlling their own bodies. The idea that we’ll end up with a two-tiered health care system when it comes to making choices about women’s issues is reprehensible but what is worse is that there are two laws – one for those who can afford to make a choice about their own bodies and one for those who can’t afford to make a choice and are subjected to the decisions of this ol’ boys club.
I’m waiting for them to tell us poor women won’t be able to avail themselves of birth control if it’s publicly funded.

Part of this, I think, is that many Catholics, like Matthew’s, are liberal about almost everything except abortion. When it comes to abortion they are are as radical in the other direction as any right-to-lifer. Birth control is a different story…. in that case most Catholic’s defy the Vatican. That’s what I’ve experienced.
Republicans have always been able to get abortions when they need them. They’ve been as hypocritical about abortion as they have about sex. Good catch on the Matthews/Russert point.
“Cafeteria Catholics” is how they’re known, GeoT.
Matthews openly states that abortion should be legal. He just believes the Hyde Amendment is the law, which cannot be changed, even as times have changed and demand a more egalitarian approach to reproductive services.
You know, BillyG, I was relentless re: Russert on this one. He would have conservatives like Southern Baptist convention representatives, all male, to talk about abortion (but also religion). He never invited women on “Meet the Press” to talk about abortion. I guess Sunday morning is not the place to have females telling their stories, as Mr. Russert saw it.
Can you say good ol boys?
Bob Somerby(The Daily Howler) has done some great writing on the Catholic influence on MSNBC going back to Jack Welsh doing all the news hiring. A good series followed Russert’s death.
Tweety is at it again as I type….

________
Not only Republicans BG but Catholics have availed themselves of abortion services when it’s been inconvenient for them to have a child. I’ve had too many experiences with Catholic moms and dads freaking out because their daughters are too young to get married and have a baby or don’t want a baby to interfere with their daughters’ educations. Every women should have the choice of carrying a pregnancy to term if they so wish but the hypocrisy that these parents have demonstrated when it comes to their own daughters is beyond anything I have ever experienced. When it’s personal and hits home it suddenly becomes acceptable if it’s a question of their own daughters’ futures.
Anybody remember Dan Quail when that little girl asked him about her being forced to carry a pregnancy to term if she were raped. He said she could get a D&C. Some of these morons don’t even know what abortion IS fer cripes sakes! Or if they do, and I knew several good repug girls in my short college carreer, they justify it by saying theirs is a SPECIAL case, not like THOSE women who just use it as a form of birth control.
Even though in the next breath they tell you THOSE women are having MORE babies to get more welfare!!!

That’s true. Abortion is the wedge issue the Republicans have used to divide Democrats and win presidential elections. And the rich have always been able to get access to abortion. I still maintain that if a woman has no rights over her own body, she doesn’t have control over much else. To me, it should be a personal choice with a right to privacy. There are always going to be opposing sides on this issue, but I don’t think one side should be telling the other side what to do. That’s why there should be choice.
It’s easy. If you’re against abortion…don’t have one. If you’re MALE and against abortion…keep it in yer pants. Period!
