I was waitin’ for this one for you, Scott!
GREAT FRICKIN’ DAY… about damn time.
Senator Franken…. sweet.
The immediate reaction seems to be that Coleman will NOT appeal to the Supremes… we’ll see.
Is it too early in the day to break out the good wine and go cra-zay-zay?
Sweet it is, GeoT.
NO, it’s not too early. Just uploaded the appropriate video, Scott. But I think this calls for BUBBLY!

Very appropriate. I’m so very happy!:):)
Franken is speaking now.
Sorry to be the naysayer here guys, but I think Franken is an embarassment. I saw him during the debates and he was flat out awful. I don’t care anymore if its a Repub or Dem who wins these elections as long as they are thoughtful, not idealogically driven and ethical.
Al Franken as a US Senator says alot about the state of the political landscape in this country. On the other hand, its Minnesota so what would one expect.

And — you prefer Norm Coleman????????????????
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 5:28 pm
I would question him too, except for the fact that many of our elected officials are knuckleheads, adulterers, and crooks. At least Franken seems sincerely interested in doing a good job for us and his wife Frannie, seems to be tickled pink.
Hey this is America, even a B-movie actor named Regan can become president, twice. LOL
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 5:28 pm
Well, throughout this recount he’s proved that he’s good enough and smart enough to be in the Senate, and doggone it… I like him!
kris
Obviously the best in debate is not necessarily the one who wins. That said, I’ve read and hear a good bit from Al Franken and I think he’s really smart.
I also think Norm Coleman committed political suicide on behalf of the Republican Party. Shows you where his main loyalty was – not to the people of Minnesota. It didn’t need to go all the way to the state supreme court for him to know he had lost the election. He did it, in my opinion, to keep a duly elected Democrat out of the Senate for as long as possible.
I can’t imagine he has a viable political future.
Anybody else think that Coleman will run for governor? Tim Pawlenty already said he would not be seeking re-election. (maybe he will be running in 2012 for Pres or VP)
AliceP -
I said nothing in support of Coleman. If you all are thrilled with him great. Hope he does a good job. We’ll see.

I like him, too. I don’t think he’s an embarrassment at all. In fact, he will be a good progressive senator. Hillary campaigned for him twice and Bill did once, I think, so he can’t be all that bad.
Oh please Lynnette. Would you expect the Clinton’s not too? I saw some of the comments both Clinton’s made when with him. Bill looked nauseous.
I just can’t get excited about a candidate simply because the have a D behind their name. An “I” is more attractive to me every election cycle.

Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot
The Truth (with jokes)
Read these – he’s not dumb. He’s quick and articulate. And, by damn – he’s a fighter. We need more Democrats who are willing to go toe to toe – rather than toe the line.
Maybe he needs to learn better debate technique.
kris
What is it that you don’t like about him – other than debate skills.
kris…please line up your facts before posting.
Franken is a longtime friend of the Clintons. They really went to the bat for him…and he would not have won without them.
Of course, the thing was so friggin close that Franken might not have won without…ME! haha
Scott Hopkins says:
30 June 2009 at 6:12 pm
I agree, Scott. Hillary is very good friends with Frannie. Hillary went there twice.
I am well aware they are long time friends Scott so don’t question my knowledge of “facts”. Why do you think I said what else would you expect from them?
I will say the one event I saw Bill and Frank together it could be that Bill was having a bad day. Plus I am not sure that helped Mr. Franken all that much. Everyone President Clinton has campaigned for recently has lost….including his wife.
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 6:03 pm
What don’t you like about him? You haven’t really said. I am not an Independent, Kris. I am a Democrat and always have been. Al Franken is my kind of Dem because he is progressive, not a Blue Dog.
Two thoughts
Norm don’t don’t go away mad, just go away and don’t let the door hit you were the good lord split you.
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

___
Hi kris.
So Joe Lieberman is your kind of guy?
That’s the only “I”
that comes to mind, but there must be others.
Then here’s the Lou Dobb’s kind of “Independent”
You’re an addicted contrarian… you’re a cross-grain kind of person… that’s cool.
I think you’re more of a Libertarian than anything else.
Actually GeoT I have been a lifelong Democrat. Campaigned and contributed to many Democrats running locally, statewide and nationally. I think I voted for a Republican exactly one time and I can’t even remember who it was it’s been so long.
I really don’t think Lieberman defines Independents. I am sick of both parties frankly. They are so entrenched with special interests and dirty money they can’t see straight. Why do we think we have the mess we have. They buy and sell the “little” guy everyday. You live in CA GeoT so I would think this would not be a revelation to you.
Personally – I would love to see more parties be given the same press the Dems and Repubs are. I would love to see more financial contributions to small parties.
And no I am not an addicted contrarian….I just don’t follow blindly.

____
There will be no guessing at how he will vote on issues he will be a reliable progressive vote. They ALL migrate somewhat towards the middle once in office, every last one of them. It’s just a matter of if it’s a lean or a full tilt.

there was no criticism in there. I meant Libertarian by nature not actual affiliation. but I really shouldn’t judge from afar.
I will admit California is in a mess…. but thinking back this is not a new phenomenon. jerry Brown was the last Governor to run a budget surplus if I’m not mistaken.
And you are correct about that GeoT. The voters of CA have been blissfully unaware of what they have been voting for, or against for decades, ergo the mess. Want to bet me some asshole will be elected Gov again and the Legislature will stay the same?
And lynnette you are also right – no mystery how Franken will vote, exactly how he is told to every time.
If you have read Franken’s two books you would know why I don’t care for him.
Kris:
I’ve always been curious because you are outspoken and graphic about who you don’t like (the “enemy’s list” I kiddingly gave you)
who would you put forward as an example of a current politician (s) that exemplifies your set of criteria for what makes ” a good leader” –either or any party?

___
I am not aware of that candidate, which party are they from?
GeoT says:
30 June 2009 at 6:51 pm
I know that, GeoT. But he’s a heck of a lot better than a conservative Dem and he’s got some guts. He is new so I know he will be more laid back – he’s 100 in seniority.
It appears the asshole candidate will come from either party
Good question about a current politician. I have to think about that for a few but off the top of my head the Gov of MI comes close.

I agree with you. He’s actually NOT a career politician (obviously) and NOT afraid of a fight that’s EXACTLY what the DEMS need. He’s smart as hell ‘ta boot.

I agree with you. That’s part of the problem we now have in getting a strong health care reform plan. I think we need a better way to finance campaigns. That might just get more independence of thought and a better chance to work across divides rather than paying allegiance to special interests. And maybe we wouldn’t have so many multi-millionaires in the US Senate.
Yep Lynnette and wouldn’t that be refreshing??????
kris says:

Yes I do.

Absolutely.
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 7:21 pm
I think she is very good. Too bad she was born in Canada – I think she’d make a good presidential candidate.
Yes she would. Let’s change the Constitution
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 7:25 pm
That means The Terminator would want to be Pres.. I don’t know about that one.
Forgot….never mind.
Isn’t interesting though that she could have been nominated to be on the Supreme Court?
kris says:
30 June 2009 at 7:44 pm
Yes. However, I would prefer to see her in office because I think she has a powerful image. I wonder what she can do after the governorship.
OT alert:
I have only one thing to say:
“I never crossed the ultimate line” I jumped feet first
(great front page Taylor)
kris, lynette:
(I know I’ve said it before)
health insurance should be a not-for-profit industry.
Take the profit motive out and you’re left with the ability to fully concentrate on quality of care and affordability.
There are existing examples of how this works in the real world.
Oh and Franken will be a strong advocate on healthcare. Public option etc.
I think the gov. of SC is a little wacky and should resign. See what men will leave their jobs and country for? The only thing he is in love with, besides himself, are tan lines and whatever body parts his “soul mate” was holding up for him to see.

should this have a separate thread?
Pentagon mulls easing ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law: Gates
ON BOARD A US MILITARY AIRCRAFT (AFP) – The Pentagon is considering how it might ease the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law requiring gays to keep quiet about their sexual identity or face expulsion from the military, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday.
“One of the things we’re looking at is, is there flexibility in how we apply this law,” Gates told reporters aboard a military plane. cont.

important aspect of above:
“That’s the kind of thing we’re looking at — seeing if there’s a more humane way to apply the law until it gets changed.”
I’ll bet Olberman just won (back) some admirers:
on DADT
“The President is Goddamn wrong on this one”
yes he said it on live TV;)
I just can’t watch Olberman…sometimes I will get too lazy to turn the channel after Hardball or turn the damn thing off but he can get me moving. That is why I am online right now.
