Like the student in Tiananmen Square, Neda has become a tragic icon

__________
Will the mainstream media, or the people of the world fro that mater have the attention span to continue to follow the events on the ground or will there be a bright new shiny object come along to distract them?

Someone yesterday at the NAF addressed Tiananmen, though I don’t see in my notes who it was. I believe it was Molavi. Anyway, Tehran is *not* analogous to Tiananmen for many reasons.
One reason is that Tiananmen happened during the middle of Deng Xiaoping’s rein. The current uprising in Tehran is happening because of a very disputed re-election, which puts the drama at a much more dynamic moment for Ahmadinejad, with the clerics also split.

I really agree with you Taylor the comparisons are cursory at best.
But as you say “perception is everything” and if her memory takes hold as the symbol of the Revolution she’ll become Iran’s version of the “Man that defied the tanks” while still representing something very different as far as what the Revolution is all about.
That’s why I mention it. Neda has earned her own spot. Comparisons aren’t necessary. What is unfolding in Iran stands alone.
John F. Kennedy put it best -
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

Based on your new post (front page) do you think we will go a full 180, from “Obama handled this with deftness and in-line with what was best for the Iranians on the street…
to “Boy he really screwed this up…. mamby pamby from the get-go and down hill from there.?” What’s your hunch?
HP front page:
OBAMA TO CONDEMN IRAN’S VIOLENCE AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Analysis: More Cracks In The Regime Emerging… Another Western Journalist Arrested… Reformers Remain In The Streets Despite Crackdown… Iran Council Rules Out Vote Annulment…
Laura Rozen reports: “President Barack Obama will condemn Iranian government use of violence against peaceful protesters and other human rights abuses at a 12:30pm news conference, sources in touch with the administration say.”
Neww grounf strategy via Nico
10:47 AM ET — Strategy for a national strike. An Iranian on Twitter who often communicates Mousavi’s strategic efforts describes one part of his supporters’ plan to carry out a national strike.
Mousavi – We will not expend any more energy talking to the Gov in the streets – we must change course
Mousavi – From Today every morning at 9am WE ALL travel to Tehran Bazaar – whatever reaction from Gov – Bazaar will close
Mousavi – stop all work and travel with friends & family toward Tehran Bazaar every day at 9am
Mousavi – do NOT wear green – dress normally – bring your children – if stopped u are ONLY going shopping
Mousavi – the objective is to bring Tehran to standstill – millions of people go shopping but NOBODY SHOPPING
Mousavi – There is nothing to fear – if asked – YOU ARE ONLY GOING SHOPPING
Mousavi – no matter what the reaction of the Gov – the Bazaar will close or be at standstill

Obama will reiterate what was released only in a statement over the weekend, delivered in person so the world, but also the GOP peanut gallery, has tape & audio.
His statement over the weekend, timed to the ratcheting up of violence, was dead on. But that he didn’t make it until *after* the crackdown is important.
Hey GeoT —
What did you think of the Prez?
And what do you think his reaction will be when protesters are going to be made “an example of” by the special court that is being set up?

Hey GeoT —
What did you think of the Prez?
The “Prez” spoke like a strong leader. And I heard some encouraging words on the health care issue. Congress needs to do the trench warfare on that, using the “Prez’s” prompting as a catapult.

Parsi On Obama
What John McCain refuses to understand:
Trita Parsi, President of the National Iranian American Council, said: “Condemning violence is different from taking sides in Iran’s election dispute. People in Iran have told NIAC’s Iranian-American membership that they don’t want the US to get itself involved in the conflict, but they do want to see the government’s use of violence condemned… Calls by Republican lawmakers to explicitly side with a specific candidate or movement in Iran can be extremely harmful to that candidate or movement. If our intention is to help, we have to first listen to the people in Iran rather than to pretend to speak for them without ever having had consulted with them,” Parsi added.

GeoT -
This may surprise you since I am one of the President’s frequent critics – I think he did an outstanding job today and his comments and observations are right on the mark.
As to my “rhetorical” question – I think it is interesting to think about. I am confident his response would be the right one. And I am certain he is pondering his options.

The measured manner of Obama’s response, while criticized by some, has been described as essential by many foreign policy observers. On Monday night, Time Magazine’s Joe Klein applauded the president for his approach. And when asked about earlier McCain’s remarks, he urged the Arizona Republican to stop talking.
“Be quiet,” said Klein. “You don’t need to do this. You know? You know what you’re doing is a self-indulgent at this point. Sen. McCain, if he’s going to talk about this, should also talk about the fact that the United States supported Saddam Hussein in the Iran/Iraq war for eight years. Every one of those protesters out in the streets, every last one of them believes the United States supplied Saddam Hussein with the poison gas that has debilitated tens of thousands of Iranian men.”
