Dan Savage is reporting the Obama administrations policy on “enforcing all of the laws, even the laws we don’t like” is actually a bit selective. It’s more like, “we’ll not enforce the law if doesn’t piss off too many people.” Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security has decided to suspend for two years a law that requires the deportation the foreign-born spouse of an American who dies before the spouse can apply for a green card. Apparently, DHS wants to give Congress time to fix the law.
Here’s a snip from Savage’s post:
So the head of the Department of
Homeland Security can suspend the enforcement of the Widow’s Penalty in order to give Congress time to “fix the law,” but Barack Obama—the President of the United States, Commander in Chief, Janet Napolitano’s boss—he can’t suspend enforcement of DADT to give Congress time to “fix the law.” Is that it? Or is Obama administration only capable of recognizing an injustice and taking action when the lives of heterosexuals are being destroyed?

From my friend Joe Subday re the presser today:

1:25 PM: The press conference is over. Iran, health care and the economy dominated. No gay questions. There hasn’t been one LGBT-related question in any of Obama’s pressers so far. Not one. Obama, however, did cite, once again, Martin Luther King’s quote:
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
Bend it faster.
I love AmericaBlog. This was my comment:
So basically the president didn’t take a stand on anything, but repeated a famous quote. How is this “news”?
I think Obama needs to be asked questions about LGBT issues, absolutely.
Oh, Idonknow…seems the President’s silence has spoken pretty loudly.
