RICK WARREN: Hey Homos, Rein In Your Gayness!

The interview with Ann Courie is stunning and this is only a tiny portion. It’s clear that even after the Donnie McClurkin kerfuffle, Obama invited what has ensued through elevating Rick Warren to preacher in chief at his inaugural. Aravosis has found a beaut on Warren’s Saddleback website, which explicitly bans gays. So much for Warren’s courage in embracing tolerance.
Oh, and Rick Warren admits he’s biologically predisposed to make love to every beautiful woman he sees. It’s not exactly akin to Carter’s Playboy lust in his heart, but it’s a runner up. But he curbs those appetites, which is what gays and lesbians should do. It renders you speechless. He also talks about the gays he knows, but the conversation Warren recounts is just too weird.
Tony, who posted a link “In the News,” has written a spot on post about it: Warren’s defenders are playing the role of the straight family members who enable the homophobic (or racist or sexist) uncle.
Segue to Rep. Barney Frank:
“I am very disappointed by President-elect Barack Obama’s decision to honor Reverend Rick Warren with a prominent role in his inauguration. Religious leaders obviously have every right to speak out in opposition to anti-discrimination measures, even in the degrading terms that Rev. Warren has used with regard to same-sex marriage. But that does not confer upon them the right to a place of honor in the inauguration ceremony of a president whose stated commitment to LGBT rights won him the strong support of the great majority of those who support that cause. It is irrelevant that Rev. Warren invited Senator Obama to address his congregation, since he extended an equal invitation to Senator McCain. Furthermore, the President-Elect has not simply invited Rev. Warren to give a speech as part of a series in which various views are presented. The selection of a member of the clergy to occupy this uniquely elevated position has always been considered a mark of respect and approval by those who are being inaugurated.”
Whatever Obama’s inauguration once meant to history it will now marred by elevating Rick Warren, which will be mentioned by many in any historical note written about it. What it will say about our new president is nothing positive. Civil rights is not something we “agree to disagree upon.” For Democrats ushering in a new century it’s a line in the sand that must never be crossed.
Obama’s selection of Warren is something you’d expect from a Republican. It’s also Obama’s intention. That about says it all.
