By now you know that the Anchorage Daily News reports that Begich leads Stevens, now by 814 votes (according to an email just received). This statement just in from Begich:
“I’ve always said that this would be a close race. After watching the votes today, I remain cautiously optimistic. As I have said before, we ran an aggressive campaign, especially when it came to early voting and absentee. From what we’re seeing, thousands of Alaskans, like me, did come out and vote early. I’m confident that Alaskans, like the rest of the country, want a new direction in Washington, and ultimately that will be reflected in the results.” – Mark Begich
The problem for Stevens is that Saxby Chambliss, in a recount in Georgia, says he’d vote to expel Stevens if he wins re-election. So Stevens is in a bad way all ’round.
But coming back around to Chambliss again, he’s got his own set of troubles in Georgia. The ad he ran against Cleland, which I’ve posted around here as well, is coming back to haunt him, mainly because John McCain called the ad “reprehensible.”
“I’d never seen anything like that ad,” McCain said at the time of the spot, which was widely condemned by Democrats. Putting pictures of Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden next to the picture of a man who left three limbs on the battlefield is “worse than disgraceful,” said McCain. “It’s reprehensible.”
That’s because it was.
Stevens and Chambliss should both be out of a job.
