Thinking About Max on Veterans Day

Every time I think how close we are to removing Saxby Chambliss from the United
States Senate, I feel a little giddy, though I’m under no illusion this will be easy. Far from it. But Saxby Chambliss, the man responsible for the ad above that defeated war hero Max Cleland, sure deserves a good whuppin’. My good friend James
Boyce runs down the details
:

Chambliss Voted Against the New GI Bill for Veterans of the Wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan.

Chambliss Has Voted Against Veterans Programs at Least 23 Times Since Joining
the Senate

Chambliss Voted Against Additional Funding to Research Traumatic Brain Injury–thee
“Signature Wound” of the Iraq War.

Chambliss Opposed the Webb Amendment Guaranteeing Troops Time At Home Between
Deployments

Chambliss Repeatedly Voted Against Additional Funding to Give the Men &
Women in Uniform the Armor and Equipment They Need.

Jim Martin, his Democratic opponent, served during Vietnam. Saxby Chambliss
pulled a Rush-Karl Rove-Dick Cheney, receiving 6 deferments for a bad knee.
Now, you don’t have to serve in the military to do a good job in Congress. But
in order to hold faith with veterans you should at the very least have their
best interest at heart. Chambliss does not. He also doesn’t respect them. Just look at his voting record. Look at the kind of campaign he once ran against Max.

Max Clelend was swiftboated to
get the job done. A war hero and three-amputee veteran, Chambliss’ campaign was a disgrace. He’s
nothing but a coward, because anyone who would use Saddam and bin Laden to swiftboat a veteran doesn’t deserve the honor of serving in the Senate.

Chambliss is now saying the runoff with Martin is the
beginnings of the 2010 elections
, as Republicans pledge to do whatever it
takes to win that Senate seat. We all know what that means. We’ve seen Chambliss
in action before. Wonder if who he’ll replace Saddam with in his next swiftboating ad
against a veteran. Or maybe he’ll let the swiftboaters do it for him.

Today, many of us in the blogosphere are taking the time to point out the importance of winning back this seat in Georgia. Not just to get closer to 60, but to do it for Max and in honor of veterans who deserve better than Saxby Chambliss. Let’s take Georgia’s seat back and send a message to Saxby 6 deferment Chambliss.

You can see all the top
stories about the Georgia runoff
here, even add your own. Go
get him, Jim.
