As for election news, there couldn’t be any better news today. Except that it looks like John McCain is losing altitude, according to a
new Washington Post-ABC News poll, which adds further impact to this news. Obama
Up by 10 Points as McCain Favorability Ratings Fall
:

Overall, Obama is leading 53 percent to 43 percent among likely voters, and
for the first time in the general-election campaign, voters gave the Democrat
a clear edge on tax policy and providing strong leadership.

McCain has made little headway in his attempts to convince voters that Obama
is too “risky” or too “liberal.” Rather, recent strategic
shifts may have hurt the Republican nominee, who now has higher negative ratings
than his rival and is seen as mostly attacking his opponent rather than addressing
the issues that voters care about. Even McCain’s supporters are now less enthusiastic
about his candidacy, returning to levels not seen since before the Republican
National Convention. …

As readers around here know, at least those reading the comments. Ten points
is the tipping point, in my judgment, among “likely voters,” which
gives Obama the momentum I believe he will need before election day. That McCain’s
ads have cost him, with his own persona falling is an added plus for the Obama
campaign as the election nears, just three weeks away.

One of the other things that I believe has hurt McCain very badly is Sarah
Palin, though the right-wing base continues to court her. But with women she’s
been a disaster. The slurs she’s helped to drive home, as McCain uses her as
his swiftboating shield, have been a disgrace for McCain.

But let’s not kid ourselves, there will likely be another turn in this election before
it’s over. Obama’s lead needs to solidify and we all need to continue to work
hard to keep it there. It’s still very good news today.
