Before she applauded Clinton, she didn’t like her, er… “whining” (or “perceived whine” – video). The Washington
Post
’s report about a “stream of soap-opera-like details about
Palin, her husband, her family and top state appointees”
isn’t exactly vice presidential resume enhancers either.

Palin could help McCain with several demographics, like the pageant community. – Powerline

Ouch.

I’ve said it’s a hail Mary pass. Desperate, in fact. But after getting so much
traction on focusing everything on Obama in a year where the Republican brand
is in the crapper, why would McCain risk it all by nominating Sarah Palin, which
results in all the scrutiny to be turned on his pick of her? Especially when she comes with real baggage
that could have people talking all next week about her ethics
issues
and the investigation
currently underway
.

TPMMuckraker
has the rundown of the story:

The scandal began on July 11, when Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan
was removed from his post with little explanation, a move whose abruptness
quickly raised questions in Alaska. A few days later, Monegan decided to blow
the whistle, and came forward to tell local media that he had been dismissed
because he refused to fire trooper Mike Wooten, the ex-husband of Palin’s
sister, after having been pressured to do so by aides to Palin. (Monegan’s
replacement, former Kenai Chief of Police Chuck Kopp was only lasted two weeks
on the job once past complaints of sexual harassment from 2005 were publicized.)

Critics pointed out that the effort to fire the trooper might have been directly
related to the fact that Palin’s family had a longstanding grievances with
Wooten. … ..

We haven’t even gotten to her creepy creationism views or her rabidly unreal
anti self-determination and discriminatory stance on women’s civil rights.

John McCain just made trouble for himself on the eve of his big convention that he didn’t need. He didn’t vet his veep pick, which is good news for us.
