Bill Schneider on CNN just “announced” that Hillary’s name will be put in nomination at the convention. This could indeed be true, but I’ve not been able to confirm it as of this post. It’s yet another leak without a name attached, as Schneider didn’t say where he got his information.
Marc
Ambinder has a long post up today that basically amounts to this: negotiations
are ongoing. At this moment nothing has been decided and all sorts of things
are possible, including some of the things in the post.
“Aides” are telling Ambinder what’s going on.
In due respect, I wonder if these are the same “aides” that handed
over the Penn memos to Josh Green. Seriously, this gossiping is what didn’t
do Hillary Clinton’s campaign any good during the primaries.
The truth is that HRC’s name may or may not be put in nomination. No one knows
for sure right now, again, including these “aides,” though I’d like to know
what “aides” are talking, because it’s not like HRC has a huge staff
handling this stuff right now.
So, read into Ambinder’s post what you want, but nothing has been decided yet.
As for the keynote speech, considering that the keynote is usually an “up
and comer,” it’s simple deduction that HRC would not want that slot. There’s
a possibility, though nothing is certain, that she could actually end up with
a better slot than the keynote. We’ll have to wait and see.
The bottom line is that right now you can talk to as many “aides”
on both sides as you want. On HRC’s side, no doubt some of these “aides”
are the same people who did HRC an injustice during the primary season by blathering
to the news media about all sorts on inside dish that came out in Josh Green’s
article.
It’s telling that the one person Ambinder tries to get on the record has this
to say:
Obama’s convention spokesperson, Jenny Backus, did not respond to e-mail
seeking comment.
Nobody is going on the record because yet, again, there’s nothing decided yet. “Aides”
blabbing does not news make. We should know that by now. However, that doesn’t keep people from writing long-winded posts saying what we alredy know, but teases a scoop, when the only people who do know are the people in negotiations and they’re not talking.
More as soon as I get it, which could come in the next five minutes or much later. There’s just no telling right now.
UPDATE 9:22 pacific: This is confirmation of the leaks. It is tremendously good news:
Statement from the Obama and Clinton Press Offices
August 14, 2008
Since June, Senators Obama and Clinton have been working together to ensure a Democratic victory this November. They are both committed to winning back the White House and to to ensuring that the voices of all 35 million people who participated in this historic primary election are respected and heard in Denver. To honor and celebrate these voices and votes, both Senator Obama’s and Senator Clinton’s names will be placed in nomination.
“I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton’s historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion,” said Senator Barack Obama.
Senator Obama’s campaign encouraged Senator Clinton’s name to be placed in nomination as a show of unity and in recognition of the historic race she ran and the fact that she was the first woman to compete in all of our nation’s primary contests.
“With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again,” said Senator Hillary Clinton.
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are looking forward to a convention unified behind Barack Obama as the Party’s nominee and to victory this fall for America.
