Hints of a Winner

In a week that was characterized by bogus reports of Democratic disunity, more nauseating Republican ads, discouragingly close tracking polls, and the Edwards affair…this quote from Barack Obama on tire gauge “issue” was probably the highlight:
“It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant. You know? They think it’s funny that they’re making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework, because this is serious business. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and make a difference.”
I would work on honing the delivery a bit, but this is exactly the sort of response we need to the same old ridiculous tactics that have put the wrong people in office for far too long. The ability to verbally trounce the opposition (and to do it with a smile) was one of the things that drew me to Hillary’s candidacy early on. And while I don’t think Barack can match that quite yet, it’s encouraging.
Most importantly, if this is what we see in the debates this fall, the contrast with John McCain would not be more clear.
This probably would have ended the silly debate all by itself, but just for good measure, McCain ended up publicly acknowledging that Obama was right about it, leading to a beauty of a comeback the next day:
“In the coming days it’s going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain…and John McCain.”
Direct, funny and totally accurate. This is a candidate that can beat the Republicans, and I hope to see more of it. Well…after the vacation, of course.
