Ever since I started this regular series back in April, I’ve been wanting to post a video by this artist. Why haven’t I? It’s because even though he’s one of my all-time favorites, I am the first to admit that this stuff is not for everyone. But here goes: From 1972, here’s “I’m Gonna Booglarize You Baby” by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.

Many of the songs from his most (in)famous album, 1969’s Trout Mask Replica, sound like four garage-rock musicians all playing different songs at once, with impenetrably weird lyrics sung by a deranged Howlin’ Wolf. But that only scratches the surface of that stunningly odd (but brilliant) album. Put simply, this music is a feast for connoisseurs of the weird and experimental…and everyone else should probably steer clear.

However, the clip above is actually one of Beefheart’s most accessible recordings, and watching the band working their unique brand of magic is very entertaining indeed. I’m a particular fan of the drummer’s choice of wardrobe. If you like this, I would recommend 1972’s Clear Spot, which is so catchy that even my mom enjoyed a couple of the songs.

Open thread. Rock on, kiddies.
